About 2 years ago when it was getting difficult to find non ethanol gas I started noticing that my truck wasnt getting as many mile to the tank as it was before. I thought maybe something was wrong. But then to test my theory I ran 3 tanks of each,.. non ethanol and 10% ethanol back to back,.. thats 6 tanks in total. 2004 2wd Silverado with 5.3, 4L60E and 3.73 factory rear gear,.. I lost 2 - 3 mpg using 10% ethanol vs straight 87 octane non-ethanol gas.
You might think that losing 2 - 3mpg isnt that big of a deal. But when you consider that I was averaging 500 miles to a tank and dropped to just over 400 miles per tank,.. that puts things into perspective. Thats almost 100 miles lost,.. and at 17 mpg thats just over 5 more gallons of gas I need to buy to travel the same distance as before. At $3 gal,.. 10% ethanol is costing me $15 more per tank to travel the same distance as before.
My test wasnt 100% scientific,.. for anyone who wants to argue semantics. I didnt travel the 'exact' same routes at the same exact speeds. Just 3 back to back tanks of 87 octane non ethanol and 3 tanks of 10% ethanol,.. and observed the differences. Went from 18.7mpg mixed driving (Non ethanol) to 16.3 mpg mixed driving (10% ethanol) as the over all average.
They say the whole reason for 10% ethanol is to improve green house gasses. In my opinion,.. if your burning more gas how are you lessening the green house gas effect? I read on a conspiracy web site that lobbyists for the corn industry got the mandate to pass into law so they could work the market for corn and inflate the cost of corn. I thought it was a crack pot idea at first. But after thinking about it I think they could be right. I mean look at how much 2 ears of corn costs at the grocery store. Its ridiculous.
