Jack the car up on jack stands or ramps,.. put a floor jack under the tranny,.. unbolt the cross member,.. lower the tranny some and it should give you the room you need if you dont want to take the whole console out. I didnt want to do ours when I did the Auto to T5 conversion,.. I did our 87 on a lift with a tranny jack.

No offense, at all... but this seems very excessive just to get at one bolt.... plus he said he doesn't have a ton of tools.....

OP, take the console out.... much easier.

Pull motor and trans together, replace shifter, then reinstall motor and tranny with new shifter

lol

Might want to clean/smooth/paint the engine bay while you have the motor out too...

All for a shifter bolt.

What would seem excessive?

The 10 mins it takes to jack it up and remove the 2 bolts holding the cross member on,.. or the 30 - 45 mins of cramped fingers (I have big fat man hands) removing the console? I'm sure it can be done quicker,.. I wont argue that. I personally dont have the patience when I'm in a hurry.

I just gave the idea because thats how I did it on me car. The hole in the tunnel for an auto is slightly off kilter for a manual,.. and the front bolts for the shifter are not excessible on my particular car even if you removed the console. I did not want to hack up the tunnel. So for my situation it was easier to install the shifter while the tranny was not fully in place. In reality,.. I think either method should work fine.
