If it wasn't for welfare i don't know how my family would have survived a few years ago. for those of you who don't know me, I'm 18, i work 2 jobs at about 75 hours a week, my dad is a crack head who tries to get clean but slips too often and as of friday is back in jail because of it, my mom works 2 jobs to try to support me, my 13 yr old brother and and my 7 yr old brother. a few years ago when there was no dad around and i was not old enough to work welfare checks and food stamps were sometimes the only ways we had any money to eat. im not saying give out welfare to anyone, especially drug users. but dont think to completely rid of it. there are millions of families struggling and every dollar aided to them means the difference between eating or going to bed hungry. some of you may or may not know what thats like, trust me its not fun forcing yourself to sleep cause you cant stand the pain of an empty stomach. growing up i was the one left hungry most of the time, i was the one who was older and gave to my brothers instead to myself. and even to this day i do the same things, thank god we got up on our feet some and nights like those dont happen any more, thats not the case for many families. so while some of you complain about the few dollars out of your checks that you may have spent on cigarettes, think about the kids who really need those couple dollars.

 

I hear ya, but how do you need to work 75 hrs a week to survive? damn. I live in this world too and dont understand that at all. We grew up better than poor on 40 hr paychecks from just my pops.

 

Not to sound like a complete dick, but drug addiction is not a reason to collect welfare!!!!!! My Dad quit school when he was 13 to help feed his brothers and sisters. There was no welfare to be had so easily.... And thats the major problem, its too EASY!!!!!! I say let the people, capable of working starve for a few weeks and they'll get a job, they'll find a way to make things happen.

Drug addiction is a sore subject (excuse) with me, my Mom has 2 sons that have been making excuses (addiction) since I was 12, Im now 34. Notice how I dont call them brothers...... Ive outted them from that title. One is in prison for the 4, 5, 6 time.... and the other has a bond and I wont get him out, because he is in the same situation AGAIN, and will be going back to prison. Thats another free ride for the taxpayers.

Thats an Idea, have incarcerated inmates earn money, grow crops, animals....to feed the ones on welfare. I bet they tell thier bithes at home to get a job and stop collecting that shit

 

I'm in no way saying addiction is a reason to collect welfare. but for a family who suffers from a parent who has been kicked out of the house because of it and struggles to make ends meet, with all the shit they (we) go through, shouldn't they deserve some kind of help? definitely not a free ride but just some help. every bit of income counts. thats why now i work 2 jobs to help my mom out.

and if anyone is wondering, i am not black, mexican, PR, ect... my mom is half black and my dad is white. i state this only because so many people have the image in their head that welfare is only given to blacks..ect..

very true. but not all people on welfare are lazy, or maybe my mom was the only non lazy one lol.. she worked her ass off. and i believe only the people that do work their ass off and still need help are the only ones who deserve it.

 

Welfare is meant to be a TEMPORARY help. Not a lifelone thing. I have used it. More than once even. But, as soon as I was back on my feet, I got off welfare. Why? Because I want it there when I need to again IF I need it again. Too many lazy users out there.

Look, a minimum wage job does not provide a "living wage". If it did, then no-one would need welfare or more than one job. Basicly, a minumum wage job is the one you take while still living at home until you get QUALIFICATIONS to work at a good paying job.

i.e. Work at McDonalds while in tech school and live at home or with a room mate. Once you finish tech school, you get a decent paying job and move into your own place.

Too many people work at McDonalds (or some other min wage dive) and say "Woe is me...I work two (or three) jobs and still can't make ends meet. I NEED welfare so I can survive. (pssst....got any rock)" Get a job skill. Welding doesn't take too long to learn at tech school, and is FAIRLY inexpensive for the schooling. The end result is that you have a TRADE that you will be able to do for almost your whole life. Carpentry is another. Take your pick...Electrician....Plumber (bonus with this one, you get to PROVIDE free crack! LOL) So....yes, you have to suffer for a while.....but not forever if you take life by the balls and let IT know whats up.
