In the days of no roll bars..."I would rather be thrown clear...(and then have the car roll over you)...
no seat belts...(when fastened held you in for a better feel of what the car was doing....it was later discovered by faster drivers)
At one point NASCAR started requiring a leather dog collar to hold the doors shut...
No fuel cells to keep gas from spiliing out of the car and catching fire back when everyone smoked cigarettes.......
helmets were to keep dirt out of your hair.......and you could still whack your skull against something....

and street turkey were great drivers when their engine was faster because they had money....

In the 1950's FamousStock Car Racer Tim Flock could have a monkey ride with him in his race car but Women were not allowed in the pits
In the 70's at the 24 hours of Daytona, there was still a sign at one pit gate that said "no women in the pits", and an illiterate armed red neck who smoked cigarettes
to enforce it. European women with foreign race teams probably used another entrance. My wife and I always exited through that one gate just to say hi and to irritate him.
And it was OK for a woman in a bathing suit to kiss the winner.
