The Art of Drift and Power Slide
Yea the Kansai video is a practice day where they are having fun, but you see the increase angle and just outrageous proximity to the wall and such. Thats where drifting varies a lot from the video here. The personality of the drifter is usually stereotyped like you said because 90% of the market is first time drivers and teenagers. Nothing is a 'proper' as other racing because its such a new sport. The best comparison is skateboarding with a car, its all style and attitude. I fight it all the time as I want the sport to grow and be respected, but when all your fans are young, they like the sarcastic/snappy responses and attitudes. Still, once you get into the sport, it would be less harsh.
"KP" is a really cool guy and the internet just doesnt always come across the right way. but from "our" stand point, there is a HUGE mis-understanding of drifting, a HUGE amount of idiots who come talk constant shit from the stands, and a HUGE amount of people who get into it for a fad. About 5 times a DAY a new person joins another FL drifting forum and asks questions that are found by searching in about 30 different sites. We are constantly having to put up with cry babies about what they deserve in this sport and why this and that when they havent put in but 6 months into it. This can make it really easy to dismiss someone new who comes in and doesnt totally grasp the sport of competitive/show drift and try to just 'blend in'. The internet makes drifters really immature, if you come to events, youll see its more just a group of drivers who are just hanging out and trying to get better. The attitudes are still a little immature at times, but its about 1/20th what the internet gives you.
for videos, if you look up D1 or D1GP, Japan, drifting, high speed, and such on youtube, there are tons of videos from all over the world showing high speeds of 100+/-. There are a few videos i cant find at the moment that are specifically high speed entry contests where speeds are nearly 130mph if i recall. there are also some extreme engle videos such as this on at 120Kph/75mph:
YouTube - The Perfect Drift
maybe someone can find the video where they are all entering at the 200kph+ speeds
you should come to the CFRC Drift event on the 18th in Orlando. Its as close as you'll get and you can get a feel for the sport. Its $40 to drive and $10 to come watch/ride-a-long.

Kinda skimmed, and LOL'd.
edit:
Alright I read a little more. bam2002 you come across 100% as the stereotypical nerdy insecure club racer. I didn't explain myself because it seemed painfully obvious, not because I'm arrogant. Boxmod, you made me blush a little

Hey Barry, glad to hear you are interested in drifting and im sorry for your first interaction with it, haha. but this is TR and you should have expected that. I think the problem lies in the fact that the more experienced guys "know" drifting to be the all out balls to the wall sport that it has developed to be over the years due partly to the popularity and competitive nature of the sport. i think they are forgetting the roots of the art and the videos from the 80's where cars are doing much less than those in the above video.
plain and simple, drifting IS the art of oversteer (which most of the cars in that vid were doing). they are not however competitively drifting or as some people say "show drifting" which is what the sport has come to embrace partly to make better drivers but also to please the cround. its just about pushing the envelope now days. but we all remember the drift bible where Keiichi is demonstrating "drift racing" and it is very much like some of the cars performing in the above video.
In a way, it can be very discouraging to young new drivers who think (from reading the internet) that drifting is all about backwards entry and high speeds. I think they feel that if they dont perform such feats in front of their peers that they'll not fit in, etc. when in fact we all started with the basics. but if you do intend to take drifting to a higher level, know that it will require more than just oversteering.

thats awesome. but i've heard way too many times that kids are afraid to enter events and "friendly comps" bc they dont want to suck in front of their peers. in reality there should be noooooo pressure. i guess thats what desoto is for. haha
