Default Welded my diff finally, pics!

Well, finally picked up a second diff yesterday.
Got an open diff for 35bux. nasty as hell, all rusted and greezy.

So, i'll post some pics and steps of what I did!

Drain nasty oil of eternal stench, be sure not to get this on your skin or you will smell like gear oil ass for the rest of your days.

This worked out pretty well for a welding position.

Turn welder up to hot as balls to penetrate the gears.
We had the mig set on the melt rocks setting.

Put in 1.25 qts of new oil.

Couldn't wait for autozone to order the part, so we made our own gasket out of high temp gasket sealer stuff.

Torque bolts to tight ftLBS

Now spend many hours on cleaning rust and grime off of diff.

Paint with a ridiculously bright color so if it ever falls off, will be MUCH easier to find!........plus its cool

Now, remove old open diff!

Be sure to scrape your BROTHERS knuckles when removing nuts and bolts.

Compare the two, and say "Damn, that is bright"

Install, and notice how nasty it is under your cars skirt with something so bright and clean next to it.

Time, all day project.
That included driving to orlando to pick the damn thing up.

Once it was back, took may 30 minutes to drain/weld/put back together.

about 3 hous to de-rust and de-grease.

Hour for paint to dry.

And just under an hour to remove the old diff and install new happy bright green super dori diff.

All in all, spent about 60bux for the Diff, paint, and gas to Orlando.

Donuts have never been so easy.

Did you take care to chip off any of those beady pieces of metal from the welding? I would think some of them would come off and play in the gear teeth a little bit. Oh well, I LOVE the green. HAHA

ya, I cleaned up the inside as much as I could (or that I cared to) and used air to blow it out as much as possible.

To de-rust?
wire brush, wd-40, air drill with a paint/rust wheel and 3 gallons of elbow grease.

I just called Discount auto, and they said they don't sell 'elbow grease'. Could I use yours?
