I don't think anyone should be concerned about what it's going to cost. The per-person price will be sorted if and when an event is organized. As it stands, we're gonna go test and show that the cars won't tear up the surface.

I feel like my efforts are being undermined by this thread and I probably shouldn't have posted anything at all, but I was extremely excited after seeing the track layout yesterday.

Buck, someone mentioned that you work at a kart track... I think the electric one in Tampa?? I don't mean to doubt your experience however, asphalt that you can stick your thumb into at 85 degrees is very poor asphalt indeed... Fort Lauderdale Executive recently repaved the full 6000ft runway with asphalt and the surface is doing great with 50,000+ lb jets landing on it. Paved on Friday, planes were landing on Monday.

The speculation is pointless though, we'll go there, test, and they will make their decision. I want to note though, that at no time did Donna say to me that we "wont be able to use the kart track for another 6 months" so please dont put forth your conjecture as though you operate Moroso. I think you must have spoken with Donna shortly before I arrived at the track, and while it seems you got a negative impression, I got quite an enthisiastic response from her and I believe DG has a decent chance at running an event, possibly as soon as Sept.

Regardless, I would greatly appreciate it if everyone would let Kyle and me make the arrangements from here on and if there are any questions, please post them here rather than calling Donna.

Thanks for the support everyone, I'll update again when something has been decided.

well shit you should have told me you were with kyle. i thought you were just a random guy with 17 posts. sorry about that.

the pavement they used on the air strip is obviously a better and more expensive grade of asphalt than what would be typically used on a kart track

also i was going by what i was told about the kart track not being able to be used yet. she told me about 6 months for the asphalt to set in.

with regards to asphalt, it is all in the polymers and "the mix." I worked with an event in Miami where the best paving company was contracted to lay down asphalt in a temporary section of a race course. The asphalt was put down with months to cure. Sixty days from the event, the entire course was evaulated and the asphault was breaking apart. It could be pulled up with you bare hands. The event had to make a decision wether to pour concrete (at a huge expense) or hope a polymer would speed up the curing process and strenghten the surface. Due to the heat and poor surface prep by the contractor, the asphault never cured properly and with the clock ticking, we went with the polymer.

The combination of intense heat, high horsepower and high downforce race cars turned the treated asphalt section of the course into a slippery section that was reffered to as the "ice rink" throughout the weekend. Eventually the asphalt gave way. By the end of the day on Saturday, there was a six (6) inch gash in the braking and acceleration sections. We ended up having to pour quickcrete overnight to fill up the grooves.

In florida, asphalt is hit or miss. Bottom line; it comes down to budget. Is it worth spending the dough? I'll bet the airport job was BIG BUCKS!!!! They are investing in their future as a commercial enterprise by offering a primium service.

Moroso looks great. I saw it a few months ago at a drag event. there were a few karts running the circuit, but not open to the public.

I asked about the comfort level of moroso regarding a drift event being run on the karting circuit, because track operators get nervous when the word "drifting "is mentioned. The owner of the Primus track is notoriously anal about the track surface. He has kicked out veteran (over 20 yrs experience) kart racers for numerous absurdities. Quite frankly, I was surprised Primus allowed a drift event. Homestead was also extremely concerned about the impact of a drift event and issued a no standing burnout decree, but in the end they were pleased with the event.

Good luck with Moroso. Let me know if i can be of any assistance. I'm looking to host a drift event on the west coast of Florida. My partners and I have insurance and sponsors.
