have to say that you can drift an americen car, but the don't hold up as well when you really beat on them. Taka had a 2001 trans am with a 6spd and the LS1. and when he tried drifting it the power steering pump exploded. i.e. not designed very well. me, if i had to choose a american drift car it would be a Mustang, due to it having rack and pinion steering, (most of the 80and early90's camaro's had recirculating ball) a very braod rang of engine and suspension options( i would build a 90-93 4cyl LX coupe with a SVo motor and 5 lub 4wheel disc conversion.) on the other hand the camaro is still a good car. my friend has an 85 firebird formula with a 5spd, 5.0 multiport motor and the WS6 package(lsd and rear discs) and most important no t-tops! and that car is fun as hell to slide around! and most people wouldn't consider a MK3 supra a drift car but i did that too. you just have to get used to the weight. mine weighed 3800 lbs with me in it(and i only weigh 135 soo)after i lowered it. it drifted just fine. but i have to say the two best cars in my OPINION are the ae86 and s13. i've had both and they just are the best platforms with which to start from. i also drifted a Starion and thought that it would make a very good drift car, just get rid of that piece of crap motor (can you say SR or even 1jzgte)

Yup 3rd gens kick butt! My 89 RS had 109k miles when I started drifting it. Cant believe how much abuse that car took and kept going. I would literally drive it like I wanted it to die and it kept going. Around 122k miles I decided I needed alot more power, so the car has been down since then. Currently I'm drifting the IROC in my signature. The only mods done on that car (116k mile car) is an aftermarket panhard bar, the $300 racecar paintjob, and a steering wheel. Stock is definately good enough to drift with!!

On a side note, believe it or not, I have drifted a SVO Mustang. It was a 85 with unknown miles (no interior). I got it for $1500 with the intent of making it a drift car. I didnt like the snap back oversteer, so I eventually went back to the Camaro. But I have to say, the SVO was probably the best stock roadracing oriented car I've ever owned, and would make an unreal drift car with the right suspension tweaks (I didnt give it enogh time to grow on me IMO).

Happy drifting!
