[h=2]Product Description[/h] Fresh on the heels of the best-selling book Lost Drag Strips comes a new look at other long-lost and forgotten drag racing facilities from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.
In the first volume, the author examined the birth of drag racing and its subsequent popularity that invaded every city and community across America. Unfortunately, after the initial explosion of popularity, it waned, and various drag strips closed for a myriad of reasons. Financial pressure for the real estate they occupied, suburban sprawl, and waning participation were all reasons for the change in fortunes for the small, and even not-so-small, racetracks. The first volume was great, but readers demanded more!
Lost Drag Strips II picks up where the first volume left off, covering even more tracks with archival photos of racing in the tracks' heyday, the cars that ran there, and coverage of the tracks as they exist today. This volume also includes some of the tracks that survived, those that fought off the economic demons and the urban sprawl and continue to run today.
Tracks in this volume include: Fort Wainwright/Racing Lions Motorsports Park, Avenue G Drag Strip, Fremont/Baylands Drag Strip, San Fernando Drag Strip, Fontana Drag City, Inyokern Drag Strip, Kahuku Air Strip, Las Vegas Speedrome, Continental Divide Raceways, SRCA Drag Strip, Southwest Raceway, Willow Run Raceway, Minnesota Dragways, KCTA Drag Strip, Detroit Dragway, Niagara Airport Dragstrip, New York National Speedway, York US 30 Drag-O-Way, South Mountain Raceway, La Place Dragway, Yellow River Drag Strip, Thunderbolt Dragway, and more.

[h=2]Product Description[/h] During the 1950s and 1960s, the sport of drag racing exploded in popularity. In its early days, drag racing had a class for everybody, from professional rails to four-door sedans. As a participant sport, drag racing made itself very accessible, and as a result, drag racing facilities sprang up all over the country, some national in scale and others very small and local. This was great, for a while, but with the sprawl of suburbia and various economic conditions including the growing expense of racing, hundreds of drag racing facilities were lost across the country. Many of these were places of legend where the biggest names in the sport got their start or ran some of their most memorable passes. Others were relatively unknown, but served a local area's needs for a safe place for local speed addicts to run their cars. For whatever reason, they are no longer in business, but evidence of their existence remains.
This book takes a look at many of the lost quarter-mile tracks across the country. Some of them are gone completely, paved over to make room for housing developments or strip malls. Others are ghostly remnants of what once was, offering a sad and even eerie subject for the photographer.
The images are teamed with vintage shots of drag racing's glory days, sharing what once was one of America's most popular pastimes with the modern reality facing these facilities today. For fans of drag racing's past, it's a sobering and interesting study. The stories are true and the photos are thought provoking, which makes this book hard to put down.
Lost Drag Strips is a 2013 International Automotive Media Competition award winner and won "best-of" in the book category.
Tracks include: Lions Associated Drag Strip, Orange County International Raceway, Riverside International Raceway, Bee Line Dragway, Motion Raceway, Motor City Dragway, Oswego Dragway, U.S. 30 Drag Strip, Dover Drag Strip, Pittsburgh International Dragway, Connecticut Dragway, Pocono Drag Lodge, Lakeland International Raceway, Green Valley Raceway, Dallas International Motor Speedway, Hudson Drag Strip, Shuffletown Dragway, Brainerd Optimist Club Drag Strip, Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip, Paradise Drag Strip, Double H Drag Strip, Southeastern International Dragway, Smithville Drag Strip, Lloyd's Drag Strip, Harriman Drag Strip, Green Valley Raceway Drag Strip, Drag City, Loudon Raceway.

[h=2]IHRA car's named for a cartoon, but driver’s for real[/h] Friday, 21 April 2017

By Rob Goodman / Images by IHR

When you see the car, you might think it's a reference to "The Flintsones," the Hanna-Barbera animated sitcom first created in 1960 about the Flintstone family of Fred, Wilma, their daughter Pebbles and dog Dino from the town of Bedrock. But at second glance, neither Fred nor Wilma nor family friend Barney Rubble is driving the Flintstone car. It's 2014 Classic Gear Jammers champion Josh Barczy, 21 – a third-generation Sportsman racer from Walnut Cove, N.C. driving the car his grandfather Jimmy Flynt raced for a couple of decades.
And that makes perfect sense, because for Barczy, racing is a family affair. Multiple generations and branches of the family spend many of their weekends racing together. And they really do race together. Car trailers and motor homes park as one in the family compound at the track.
"My whole family's involved with IHRA, and every weekend, I get to spend time with them while we're racing," Barczy said. "My grandpa's here with us – the main thing is I get to spend time with my family; driving's just a bonus, and getting to go fast is another bonus. Racing with my family and spending time with my grandpa when we work on the car makes a lot more memories for later on in life. It's pretty important."
Barczy and his grandpa have been tight since, well, since Josh was born. The two have been mostly inseparable when it comes to the family hobby, but since the beginning, Barczy has had one focus.
"When he was a little bitty kid, that's all he wanted to do – drive that car," said Grandpa Jimmy Flynt, 83, who raced in IHRA from 1984-2012 when Barczy took over the ride. "He helped me work on it when he was a baby. Every week he'd ask if he could drive it. When he turned 16, I figured it was about time to let him do it."
"It's pretty special to drive my grandfather's car – it's a car that's been in IHRA for a long time," Barczy said. "There's a lot of history and family history behind it. All of my grandpa's friends called him Flynt-stone; one of them said he'd pay him if he put it on the car. It's spelled different because of the cartoon. Racing together kind of brought my family even closer together."
But don't think, even for a second, that Barczy driving grandpa's car is only a family thing. Barczy's got skill. Earlier this season at the Darlington Dragway IHRA Summit Sportsman National Championship event, Barczy was the No. 1 qualifier and reached the third round in the weekend's final race.
"First day at Piedmont (Piedmont Dragway in Julian, N.C. just south of Greensboro) he was real good," Flynt said. "I had it real loose, and it went straight up in the air. He said he wasn't expecting that. Next time, we tied it down a little bit, and he went on down the track – he was perfect that time. He's real relaxed in there, and it's just natural. That's all there is to it, but drag racing is all he's ever wanted to do. I wasn't as good as he is – I won a lot of races; we won everywhere, but he's done a lot better than I ever did. He has driving skill."
The IHRA community is starting to realize the guy can drive. After winning rookie of the year honors in 2013, Barczy was the Classic Gear Jammers champion the next year racing the series throughout the Carolinas, and this year he's making the Flintstone car look good in IHRA Super Stock. He works early mornings at UPS and attends Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem, N.C. pursuing an associate degree in welding, but if all goes according to plan, he may not need to weld forever.
"I'd love to turn pro," the grandson said. "My dream is to be a Pro Stock driver and get behind a 500 cubic inch hard-turning car going 215-220 mph. That would be awesome getting to shift gears like that. That's my number one plan – will it happen? I don't know. You never know. The right person could see you, and that's all it takes."

[h=2]IHRA Track Profile Nation's oldest running drag strip, the Dragaway[/h]

Nation's oldest running drag strip, the Dragaway is an institution

By Jeff Birchfield

It's the oldest operating drag strip in the United States, but folks are still confused with two facts about Great Lakes Dragaway.
Yes, the International Hot Rod Association member track's name is Dragaway, not Dragway, and it is in Paris, Wis., instead of nearby Union Grove.
It was track founder Marge Bennett who first coined the term "Dragaway." She was working in California around World War II when she first saw drag racing. When she came back to Wisconsin, she and her husband, Lynn, decided to buy property for a drag strip. Current track co-owner Randy Henning explained she would say, "We're going to build a drag strip so all my friends can just drag away."
The historic track was opened in 1955, but, even literature today like the official Wisconsin state travel guide lists it in Union Grove, where the post office box is located. No problem for Henning and his partner, Marcel Kuper, who saw how much the historic track meant to both communities nine years ago.

After a flood left the drag strip covered in mud and debris, both communities pitched in with a fire truck and over 100 volunteers who came out with squeegees to clean the track's surface.
"You run into people around the country and say, 'Great Lakes Dragaway,' and they say, 'Union Grove, Wisconsin,'" Henning said. "It's really in Paris, but our racetrack is strong and where it has been here so long, it's truly a part of the community where everyone takes pride in it."
Henning shares in the affection, going down the track the first time as a 16-year-old behind the wheel of a 1952 Chevy. He later raced a variety of machines including a Volkswagen, an Alcohol Funny Car and a Jet Dragster. He is currently working on a Wheelstander to resemble Richard Hutchins' famous Chevy Rebellion Wheelstander.
Throughout its rich history, the flashiest promoter was "Broadway Bob" Metzler, who often wore wild-designed sunglasses, air-brushed T-shirts and Zumba pants. Metzler, the first promoter ever inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame, brought in concerts, parades, the circus and even motorcycle daredevil "Evil" Knievel.

"There is so much history there, from Broadway Bob to the salt-of-the-Earth people like Lynn and Marge Bennett who helped start the place," said Henning, who has been an owner for over two decades. "So many people have worked real hard to make it a success and we've just continue to work hard at it so we can make incremental improvements."

But, the dragaway's main appeal has always been the racing with such names as "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, Don "The Snake" Prudhomme and Shirley Muldowney frequent visitors to the track. It remains one of the busiest tracks in America with racing six days a week during the season. They even host snowmobile drag racing, where the sleds are fitted with conversion kits to race on asphalt in the summer and race on snow in the winter.

"Since 1994, we've concentrated on just on drag racing," said Henning, who along with his wife, have even served as EMTs at the track. "We've made it a drag strip under the banner that we want to be the biggest, little track in the world. We want to be the track where anyone can take their own car and go down the track six days a week to try it."

The track features a combination of its own strongly supported programs, which includes special events for Nostaglia cars and Jet Cars, and the IHRA Summit SuperSeries. While the dragaway may be the oldest running track, Henning and crew remain committed to keeping up with the current longings of its racers, fans and local businesses.
"We're committed to the grassroots, Sportsman racers and we have the IHRA Summit SuperSeries for those racers," Henning said. "But, we also are committed to those who want to see a variety of drag racing. We do a lot of jets, and once a month, there are Pro Mods and Gassers. We have a big enough track where we can have multiple things going on at the same time. We even have an area set aside where a business can host an employee picnic."
