Drag Racing is a type of motor racing in which bikes or cars compete, generally two each time, to be first to go across a set surface line. The race follows a brief, straight course from a standing beginning over a measured distance, most commonly 1/4 mile (1,320 feet (402 m)), with a shorter 3/16 mile 10 feet (1,000 ft (305 m)) for nitromethane powered Top Fuel dragsters and amusing cars, while 660 ft (201 m) (1/8 mi) is also popular in some circles. Digital timing and rate noticing systems have actually been made use of to record race outcomes since the 1960s.

Drag racing has existed in both road racing and regulated motorsport kinds since motorcycles and cars were created. The street racing form, which is prohibited, is covered elsewhere; this article covers the lawful sport.

Before each race (commonly called a pass), each driver is enabled to carry out a burnout, which warms the driving tires and lays rubber down at the beginning of the track, boosting grip. Each vehicle driver then align (or stages) at the beginning line.

Rare, historic footage of the first ever NHRA national event in 1955, taken before the event was rained out. The footage includes cars campaigned by Art Chrisman, Art Arfons, Edelbrock, Offenhauser, and other legends of racing. No sound.....super 8 movie film had no sound capability in 1955.

[h=1]Line Lock Launch: A Mustang Drag Racing Tradition Since 1965[/h] [h=2]Gas Ronda Launch Tips[/h] http://image.mustangandfords.com/f/9...-poppy-red.jpg

It was breaking news for 2016; for the first time ever Ford’s Mustang would be sold in Australia through factory official Ford dealerships complete with right-hand drive, but there’s one option that’s not available in Australia, and that’s a line lock. Its not that Australians don’t like to drag race, it’s just the Australian government is a little ahead of the curve when it comes to spoiling a person’s fun through legislating repressive laws.

Historically speaking it was in 1965 when the first Ford Mustang was equipped with a line lock, but it wasn’t on a stock 1965 Mustang that rolled off the assembly line—it was installed on Gas Ronda’s factory experimental A/FX drag car.
As card-carrying members of the Hot Rod Club we were surfing Hot Rod magazine’s complete online archives and found a September 1965 tech article by Eric Rickman where Hurst Performance Products engineers installed Hurst’s Line Lock on Gas Ronda’s Poppy Red 1965 A/FX Mustang fastback.

It’s likely the same car (but it would it be interesting to know for sure) featured in Hot Rod’s tech article that was the 427 Hi-Riser car Gas destroyed testing for the 1965 Winternationals when an axle broke.

Gas Ronda’s replacement car from Ford was one of five A/FX Mustangs powered by a 427-inch SOHC motor. As a 13-year old kid I went to the ’65 Winternationals at Pomona with my dad, and we watched Gas Ronda’s A/FX Mustang run.

After the 1965 Winternationals, I remember Gas Ronda’s ’65 A/FX Mustang sat parked out in front of Russ Davis Ford’s Covina, California showroom until it left for the AHRA World Finals, where it set a new A/FX class record at 10.43/134.73 mph.

1988 Winternationals... IHRA
IHRA - IHRA: Throwback Thursday - 1988 Winternationals at Darlington

IHRA: Throwback Thursday - 1988 Winternationals at Darlington Thursday, 09 June 2016
Steven Cole Smith
This week, we feature Darlington Dragway as the track celebrates its 40th birthday with a new leaseholder and multiple upgrades.
This ESPN video shows what the track looked like in 1988, when it featured some of the top names in drag racing for the IHRA All Pro Winternationals. The hosting team – Pat Patterson, Lon Lundberg and Brett Kepner, wearing his Tom Selleck mustache – dishes up 45 minutes of vintage racing.
Pro stock drivers include Jerry Haas, Bruce Allen, Warren Johnson, Rickie Smith and Bob Glidden.
Funny Car pilots include Kenny Bernstein, Trip Shumake, Mark Oswald, and the action includes a quarterfinal run of John Force versus Scott Kalitta.
In Top Fuel, drivers include Jack Ostrander and Gene Snow, and highlights include a run by former pro football quarterback Dan Pastorini against Joe Amato.
It's an entertaining history lesson, both on the track and in pro drag racing, from 28 years ago.
