Default Drag Tire Dilemma

I have a problem, I want to get more/some traction and I would like to do it on drag radials. I have 16x8'' 3rd gen rx7 wheels that weigh 13.5lbs each with 26x10.5 ET streets on them. I would like to put some 275 or bigger drag radials on them but both BFG and nitto dont make anything wider than 255's on 16's.

Does anyone know of any other company that makes drag radials wider than 255mm on 16's? Or does anyone have any suggestions. I know I could get 15" wheels and put 275's on them, but that costs alot and most companies dont make anything wider than 15x7.

I am also aware that with a thinner tire I will have more weight/inch, but I still think a 275 nitto drag radial will hook better than a 255, am I wrong?

Also is it safe to run ET streets on the street even when racing on the highway at high speeds. I have heard lots of stories about that.

Well any DR won't hook like a ET street. But since u wanna do t on Dr's I can give my opinion as what tire would be the best choice. Remember it's not all about the width of contact patch but also sidewall height. Yes a 275 is wider than a 255 but a 275 has a smaller sidewall(assuming same rim size) so it won't wrinkle as much as a 255. What are the sidewall measurements(i.e. 255/??/16?) IMO get a 255 with a bigger sidewall than aposed to a 275 with like a 45/50 serires sidewall. The bigger the sidewall the more shock or "hit" the tires can take. That's why in drag racing the 15" rim is the rim of choice cause of amount of sidewall. The companies that I am aware that make Dr's are Nitto, Bfg, McCreary's, Mickey Thompson, and there's one more but can't remember the name. If you absolutely want to get a 275 series tire on a 16" rim I think it has to be atleast 9" diameter rim. Hope this helps. -Mark

I need atleast a 50 sidewall. BFG only makes a 50 sidewall for the 16" wheels and they do make a 60 sidewall for the 275-15's. I would like to get a 275/50-16 or 275/60-16 but no one makes it.

Also where can I find info on McCreary drag radials?

I researched a little on the M/T sportman pros :

http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/street.html

Has anyone used these? Is the performance similar to the nitto or BFG drag radials? It says drag slick compund and D.O.T. aprroved wrinkle wall, would they be safer than the ET streets at highway speeds? Also does anyone know the tread wear rating?

McCreary's are not drag radials, they are dirt track tires and are a really soft compound. They did a really good job for me on the Dirtmobile, not quite as good as BFG's but better than Nitto's and they were considerably cheaper too. They do suck hind tit in the rain and wear out rather quickly though. They are no longer called/made by McCreary BTW. They are now American Racer. Once upon a time, you could find a lot of information about pricing and sizes at www.butlertire.com but I haven't been there in a long time. If you can't find anything there, get with Dan at Idlewild Racing. That's where I always bought mine.
