Hey guys My car is making a strange sound under load it sounds like a rod knock to me but I am not an expert. Is anybody over in the Ulmerton and 19 area (I work about 5 minutes from johns shop) or plan to be later? I would appreciate it if someone else could listen to it and let me know if it is even safe to drive it home or up to Z. Hills were I will prolly end up spending all night slaving to get my truck running so I can park my car till i can afford the repairs.

Thank you John I talked to taylor on the phone he said you guys would be down there. looks like I may be rebuilding the motor after all.

 

First just run a vac and compression test thatll tell you a lot right off the bat. And like I told you the other night check out your plugs especially three as it tends to show conditions better. Another good idea is to listen to the engine while it runs with a stethescope. If John doesnt have one on hand you can just use a long 3/8 extension (hold it to various areas of the block and put your ear against the other end).

Id offer to help you out but Ive got two midterms to study for. If you still need a hand come Friday drop me a line since Ill be done with them then.

 

Does John work on fords? I think Im losing compression in cyl 1 or 3 it may just be running lean cant really tell but it just feels like its losing what little power it had in the first place.

I am almost 100% sure its a rod knock just ask Taylor what it sounded like on the way across the howard franklin. I swear Ive only driven slower across that bridge one other time and that was when I got a flat tire while crossing the bridge.

On the bright side I dont have any excuse to wait on rebuilding the motor with various aftermarket internals

 

Rod knock is the single most horrible noise on the face of the planet.....

 

Youre positive the noise isnt from the suspension or tranny?
With the car in nuetral and throttle applied can you still hear the noise?
Rod knock is not a nice sound to hear...to make absolutely sure that its not rod knock check your wallet. If money is being sucked out of it before your eyes then its definately rod knock...

BTW It is the most disturbing sound I have ever heard my car make the drive in to work this morning sucked hardcore I cant hold a steady speed above 45 mph. to go faster I have to constantly speed up and then slow down to keep it from sounding like a highschool percussion group.

I agree with John I think I spun a bearing based on the sounds its been making for the last week or so before it started knocking.
