An issue with stuffs...
I recently sold my built head to someone here on TR. Everything went fine with the sale, but the shop that put everything back together had it sitting around for quite some time, and it got rust in some of the ports, and on the valves a bit. The head was also not assembled all the way, the cam rockers were not put onto the cam and nothing was torqued down. If I had noticed this before, they would've put it back together for me no problem.
Well anyway, I notified the buyer of this at the time of sale. I wasn't aware of it until I was on my way of bringing the head to him all the way out in Orlando.
The head was sold with new valves, and seals, 4 of which had to be replaced because a piston smacked them. I get a call from him a couple days later, saying several things are wrong with the head, per his shop that he took this to. One of which, them saying the head was warped (specifically saying it was off .005). When he advised me of this, I told him I would pay for half the cost of his parts if there was indeed something wrong. Now I was a little upset with my shop, because the head was not assembled when I picked it up. So I gave them a call, telling them how there was rust on it, and how this other shop said a bunch of bad things about the head, being that the porting was too much, the seats were bad, etc.
My shop instructed me to have the buyer bring the head to them, they would warranty anything that was messed up on the head, and not charge anything.
The buyer continues to drop the head off with his shop in Orlando, stating they work with Honda's all the time, and they're great, etc. I was already suspicious of this shop because by "looking" at it, with no straight edge or any tools, saying the head was warped. Well he dropped it off with them, they hot tanked it, and had him go buy valve seals. He never contacted my shop, or had them look at it like I advised. So what should I do here? I told him to take the head to my shop, so they could at least confirm anything wrong with the head, and if so, warranty this. He called me today to let me know his shop has already begun to work on the head, they've hot tanked it for 4 hours to get rid of the rust, because they were afraid to grind it away, as the head's been ported.
Being as he didn't take it to my shop, Im feeling as though I shouldn't have to pay for anything that he and his shop has done to this head, because it was never confirmed through my shop that anything was wrong. Nor did he even seem to care that they would have fixed this under warranty.
I feel like an asshole for not helping the kid out. He's a good kid and all, but this isn't my fault he was too lazy to bring it out to Ybor and get the head looked at. He's going to end up costing at least himself, and possibly me, money.
Comments?

Cliffs notes: I sold a head to some guy, there were issues with the head that my machine shop said they would check, and warranty if needed.
Buyer then takes head to other machine shop and has them work on head.
Should I help pay for this shit that could have been free for repairs? Even more so, there might have been NOTHING wrong with the head besides a little rust and needing assembly.

I wouldn't worry about it. You made a reasonable offer and he chose to go another route. If he had bought the heads, or anthing, for that matter, new, found a problem and then had some work done to them before he returned them to the seller, they would tell him to piss up a rope.
You tried, he declined. Spend his money and enjoy.

You offered him a perfectly good alternative to either party having to spend money to make things right. I don't see any problem with you not paying for repairs so long as you made it perfectly clear you aren't going to pay for his shop to fix the head because of the free warranty work at your shop in Tampa.

Dont sweat it, If you told him your guys would warranty the work and he decided to take it somewhere else, then he can go fly a kite. I wouldnt drop a dime on it.

I recieved this PM from him...
Head Diagnosis
I now understand that you probably wanted me to bring the head to your shop, but you gave me the option willingly so I took what was more convienient and what seemed like the best interest for the head. According to my machine shop the head work quality is, and to be as frank as possible, garbage. Nothing to be upset about but there is always someone that can do what you do better, so that is why I took it to them. It was a just a conflict of interest, I trust my shops quality and you trust yours. That is natural. The work minus parts is 220. I know you said you would take care of half of everything but 100 would be fine and I will take care of the rest. I will send you the invoice so you see what is paid for, and what all the work entailed, since there was confusion earlier. As promised I will do my best to try to get you those parts you need. My best does not mean just asking a few people. I do wish this did not have to come to this. Only if the shop did what they were supposed to do the 1st time. In any case LMK
This is my reply.. and I feel horrible about this.
In feeling bad, I offered to pay for the parts. Instead of half of the parts.
Somehow to install valvestem seals, and reseat 8 valves, they're charging this kid $220.00

This is really an upsetting thing. This could've all been taken care of at no charge at the machine shop I went to. I realize it was more convienient for you time wise, but hardly monetarily.
I told you I would pay for half the parts that were damaged because of their error, I didnt say labor.
Im confused as to the "garbage" comment from your shop. Frankly, I think they're trying to fuck you.
I will pay for your parts, but I will not pay for the labor that they claim this head needs. None of this would be an issue if you woulda dropped it off at my shop. Im sorry man, I'm not wanting to be an asshole about this, and I feel bad.
I don't know what else to do about this. I have no way of knowing exactly what was wrong with the head. They hot tanked the head and pressure trested it, etc. w/o even letting my shop fix thier possible error. I cannot justify throwing money away because of thier word. My shop has been in business since the 70's. I trust them with all of my stuff, and they have never failed me.
I think that shop is giving you the shaft, I don't see the head costing 200 dollars to be repaired. Everything that you've relayed to me that they've said, and what I heard on the phone sounded off. I would suggest you goto another shop.
Im sorry man. I will not cover the labor.

Comments anyone? I really feel like shit. This is a good kid... but Im not throwing the money away that should've never had to be spent in the first place.
When he brought the head to them, the shop took the head, and with in 2 minuites said it was warped, .005. They told him some valves might be bent... AFTER they hit it with a mallet to free some rust that was on there, they never tried to lube the valves up.
This head had been sitting at the shop on a shelf, waiting for the kid to come up with the money for it.
