My comment was referring to OPs repeated mentioning of standing out, being rare, seeing them on the street, etc. and the comment about which responds to mods best. Either way, I'd get the M3 because it is closest to a sports car of the current Ms. I have not used a BMW dual-clutch transmission, only the old single-clutch smg. The new duals are supposed to be smoother and faster-shifting, but real manual is the only one I'd choose (even if its a tenth or two slower to 60mph). Also I do remember in one of Car and Driver's first track tests of the new M3 (w/ dual-clutch trans option) they had gear selection problems and got a better lap time in full auto mode.

I don't know what kind of mods you want to do, but as far as motor/drivetrain mods there aren't a ton for either 3 Ms. The motors are kind of engineered to their limit. Do you need more than 400hp in an M3 anyway? I gotta ask- why are you buying an M car vs. another model like a 335i, 550i, etc?

Maybe I'm just bitter towards random people getting into BMWs by buying two new Motorsport cars for them and their wives to haul groceries from Wild Oats.

Edit- not trying to be a TOTAL dick, but you cant even use punctuation/spell "field" etc/put real sentences together, so should you really even be driving a car, let alone a fast one? If you are a real person and not a troll, I'm mystified as to how you have gotten far enough in life to afford these cars without elementary level skills.

the new vs old smgs is amazing. i was a big fan of the smg from the e46 M3 i actually liked it thought it worked well. but the new one (from the M5/M6 haven't driving a new M3 yet) is soo buttery it really adds to the pleasure of driving the car. many review of the smg isn't all that hot but most of them are written by lovers of 3 pedal driving. only thing you have to get use to with smg's is parallel parking in the hard sport modes they have attendance to lurch a bit which makes inching up on a car a little strange at first.

either the M3 or M6 would be a great pick up, and be eye catchers

the E90/E92/93 M3 with DKG is available since BMW released the convertible E93.....it has nothing to do with the old SMG II of the E46 M3.

the actual M3's are good, but I wouldn't want one because everbody got them now....it has become a fashion accessory because BMW had to get on one level with Audi and their new models.

There's no racing pedigree left in those cars, way to overload with stuff you need for long Autobahn trips.

Quite a few people bring their new M3's to the Nürburgring though, but mostly they have a hard time with the M3 CSL's.

If you want to stand out, what's more of an Audi thing, you should buy the M5 or try to get the M5 Touring, I bet nobody got one of these.

If you want turbocharged M-models you should get the new X6 or X5, they'll be available soon.

no one but enthusiasts will notice an m5, m6, m3, or any other car we think is special. thats why being noticed shouldnt even be on the list of reasons to buy any car. wanna get noticed? thats such highschool BS. grow up or just paint your car some bright ass color and please stay away from BMWs.

ok well first of all that's y i wanted to get one cause i'm far from some rich ass kid that daddy just brought me a car. i work my ass off for mine. i always want a bmw just never had the cars. now that i'm in the cash flow to get one i wanted to hear respectable respones back on it. where i want to stand out is when i go to meet ups and chill. i hate driving the same model but different mods if i wanted to do that i would just stay with hondas which is what i know and go to some gay meeting looking at everyone sitting there looking like me!!!

the x5 is not an M5 turbo.

the X5 is an suv, the M5 is sedan

the new X5M or whatever the badge as is suppose to be getting a twin turbo V8 from what i've read not a twin turbo version of the naturally aspirated V10 from the M5

it'll be a heck of an suv

if the M6 new M3 are in your range i suggest also looking over at the 911 (996 and 997) turbos. similar price range and amazing to drive.

not sure if a pcar is your style (some people just don't really like them) but if they are and you need a place to read up on them see pro/cons of each generation etc let me know and i'll forward you some forum links

The new X5 M what is called has the tweaked V8 TT engine of the X6 xdrive 5.0i and the F01 7series.

the new X6 M gets the same engine....over 500 bhp and enough torque to spin the globe.

And this is it:

550HP at the crank
It´s based on the N63B44 V8 Twin-Turbo from the X6 and F01/02, not on the S85 V10 NA from the M5/M6!
