Default Another new guy

Ok, I've recently been looking into getting a bike, but the thing is I'm totally new at this. I know I'm gonna need to do an MSF course. And I'm looking at that suzuki afterburner is selling.
I know I want to start small and cheap. I've taken a fall when I was on vacation in vietnam a few years back. But I think I've matured a bit since then.
Anyhow, my main question is how much should I expect to spend on all the gear? Stuff like: helmet, gloves, boots, jacket, pants, etc.
Another thing is I'm short (5'3") and was wondering how much it would cost to get a bike lowered to fit me. Or if it's even possible.
I've been told you don't have to be insured to ride as long as you wear a helmet, but I'm still not 100% positive on that yet.

Anything else a n00b would need to know?

if you're under 21 or you're making payments on the bike you have to have insurance hun.... but other than that no...... but it'snot a good idea not to.... go to www.msf-use.org for the MSF course info i just got done with mine

I'm 21 and I'm gonna own the bike.
Where do you recommend to go for the MSF course?

Gear should cost:
Helmet - $160
Gloves - $50
Boots - $125 (I think)
Jacket - $250
those are just rough estimates

If you want you can lower the bike, but you might want to cut the seat down a little.

I think, the rule is if the bike is under $10k you dont have to have it insured(not 100% sure). What your getting does not have to be insured.

Sweet.
So all I need is MSF training, gear, and a bike and I'm set?

One last question, can you put a radar detector on a bike? I've noticed the valentine one has a motorcycle thing.

btw, thx for all the help.

I hear ya on that. Better safe than sorry. I was already planning on about $1k for gear.
After I do the MSF, anyone wanna help me pick out my gear?
I live in Holiday, and the closest decent shop to me is cycle springs in countryside. Any other shops you guys would recommend?
