First I would check the oil level, a low level oil can give you harder shifts.

im a noob on bikes, but wouldnt the oil light come on if it was low, or can a very small amount make that much of a difference with shifting? is car oil and bike oil same thing as long as its synthetic and 10w 40?

we are a bunch of fucking noobs at one point. dont rely on the oil light to come on, chances are its not low enough to cause the light to come on but its LOW enough to affect your shifting.

im gonna spoon feed you on what to do. DO NOT PUT CAR OIL. the additives on the car oil can make the clutch slip.

1. change the oil and oil filter. i recommend using purolator (14610 or 14612 for the shorter version filter but check and cross reference your oil filter), and use 15w40 rotella or 5w40 rotella synthetic - buy the purolator white filter from advance auto parts (no do not buy the yellow purolator filter) and the rotella oil from walmart.

2. dispose your used oil properly by recycling it - go to advance auto parts or autozone.

3. ride the bike after and see if you feel any difference.

the end.

Car oil is fine I run Castrol GTX 20/50 and have been doing it for many years.

The oil light will not come on when there is low oil, the light will come on with low oil pressure I believe on the kawi's. To check oil level you hold the bike straight up and look at the eye hole you should have two lines a low and high. You want to be at the high mark

Tell her to actually use the clutch when downshifting.

Explain a little better, bc this sounds its doing what its suppose to... One click is one gear change, teach her to downshift properly bc coming to a complete stop in any gear above 2nd is going to make it difficult to downshift to first. None of the bikes I have ridden do this, the output shaft is not spinning and the transmission gets to the point that the dogs can't engage properly and if she keeps on trying she will Fuck the transmission up...

my 05 had a similar problem but changed the oil and it went away...also theirs a spring inside that (rarely) may need to be changed..that is what the stealership told me $7 part but a couple hours of labor just to get to it however that was 3 years ago and never had a problem since.
