I'm thinking about selling my bike, but I've never sold something like this privately before. I typically just trade in stuff.

I wanted to see if someone on here could help me out or point me in the right direction. I've been doing some research and found out a few different things.

When I sale the bike, I will need and/or should do the following during the transaction:

1) Motorcycle Bill Of Sale (Notarized for both parties)
2) Sign the Title over to the Buyer
3) Cash or Certified Check (Wait till check clears)
4) Contact DMV and remove registration

Does all of this sound about right? Are there any tips that you guys can provide me?

Bill of sale is optional in my opinion, I never really did it. I would always contact the DMV afterward so that they know the vehicle is no longer yours. Yes, sign the title over.. YOU write the mileage, selling price and all other information requested on the title. If you decide to give the guy/girl a break and let them fill in the price on the title for tax reasons, you should write up an honest bill of sale. Cashier's checks are just like cash so you shouldn't have a problem accepting them and cash itself.

Cashiers checks are NOT just like cash, and you can't cash them just anywhere. They are called "checks" for a reason. These things are forged all the time. You'll be best served to wait for all funds to clear into your account before letting anything go, or signing over any paperwork. If the buyer wants the item immediately have them bring cash.

 

I agree cash works best, however, if you can accompany them to the bank (if you're that paranoid) and watch them get the cashiers check then there are no problems. Furthermore, you can call their banking establishment and confirm the validity of that cashier's check while they stand there.

Just saying, the chances of you getting a forged cashiers check is slim to none.. for a few different reasons that don't really matter.

i agree...my current bike...they guy wanted cash so he met me at my bank i wrote him the check and they cashed it rite there for him....

it's all in how u negotiate the deal

 

1. Optional, not nescesary
2. Yes
3. Cash only
4. Go to DMV and turn in tag unless you plan on getting another bike, in that case go down and tell them you sold it.
