Default Helmet Law

One of the recent rider down threads got me thinking, why is it that the law is not in effect anymore to require motorcyclists to wear a helmet? The man who just recently passed away (Michael Gwaltney) was wearing one at the time of the accident, however at impact, his helmet flew off and was not able to save his life. Granted, in many cases, a helmet is protection that can be the determining factor in the outcome of an accident.

Many motorcyclists have chosen to ride without helmets now that the law is no longer in effect, and every day someone loses their life. DOT approved helmets can only withstand up to a 14 mph direct impact, which is not much at all, but many accidents do not result in impacts directly to the head. In those cases, the helmet protects the rider's vision, mouth including jaw and teeth, and aesthetically, eliminates road rash from the face.

What do you think?

Do you all wear helmets? Why/Why not?

this is a thing for school, cut me some slack

I do not understand why they do not have a helmet law here.. It seems the folks running the state as far as passing laws spend a lot of time thinking about how dangerous the motorcycle crowd is. Interesting, though, how they seem to over look mandatory safety precautions that, in my opinion, are a key to a higher survival rate in any given crash as opposed to nothing at all. Pretty obvious, but that's my .02

I wear a helmet because if I die on a bike I don't want people calling me an idiot for not wearing one. Seriously though, anything helps in a crash and if you can protect any one thing, in my opinion, you should protect your head first.

It would totally save lives I mean they still have seatbelt laws so why not have helmet laws as well.

I wear my helmet all the time. Not to mention jacket, gloves and boots. You just don't know what will happen. Life is unpredictable.

its one of those things. yes there should be a helmet law, but since cops are fucking stupid as fuck and would write tickets when not needed. we just can't have one.

if your in daytona riding down the beach at 5mph and you don't want to wear a helmet. that should be ok even with a helmet law. but since we have cops that should not be cops. some people have to be allowed to kill themselves so that we keep our right to choose when and where one is not needed.

I dunno, I just always have worn a helmet. All the usual reasons.

Don't want to end up like my friends with the rest of the group riding out to my FUNERAL.
Keeps my face warm and unwindburnt when its colder than hell out.
Road rash sucks, as does having a deformed face.

I wear a helmet all the time, doesnt matter if im test riding the bike around the block because I just worked on it, or if im riding down to the store. It gives me a sense of comfort to have it on my head. (Plus im so damn sexy that if I didnt wear one, there would be accidents everywhere I go from bitches staring me down. Plus, you know the hoes love to stare at the guys in the alphabet gang riding with me.)

Gloves too, but they mainly just are for grip. As for jackets and boots and that whole 9 all the time I dont really go for everytime I take it out, I occasionally ride in shorts, and vans, but whatever, its my choice.
