Like anything else.... create an environment were "they" decide they want to do it.

I screwed up with my oldest son... pushed him too hard.
Learned that lesson the hard way.

Now, I try to lead by example and create a fun filled experience for them.

I try not to focus to much on what I want.... and more on what they need and want.

When it is "thier" decision, they are much more inclined to stick with it and put forth genuine effort.

One day the wife and I decided motorcycles would be a forum to spend time together as a family.
We generated interest with the kids by exposure.
That was years ago and we have had many memories from riding.

My daughter was interested largely from watching races with me on TV. I told her that when she got good at riding a bicycle with no training wheels that we'd get her a motorcycle. She took to it very quickly and skipped the whole training wheels on a motorcycle phase.

She rides a Razor MX350. It's a 24V electric bike, quiet enough to ride pretty much anywhere, quick enough to provide a thrill, and cheap. I feel like it was a very good choice for a first bike. It even puts up with me goofin off on it in the cul de sac, great lil toy for a couple hundred bucks.

Her three (as of last week) year old brother also rides it but doesn't have the same internal motivation that she does. I'm afraid that I may not be patient enough with him. It's hard not to be impatient about things like looking forward and not just pinning it wide open. I think he may need to get a little older before I'm really comfortable with him on that thing.

True Story

When my son was 3, about to turn 4, he was totally emphatuated with motorcycles, dirt bikes in particular.
As we drove past a pasture full of cows...
With all the excitment in the world he screamed "Dirt Bikes!!!".
as he pointed out into the pasture full of cows
... no bikes.... all cows...
.....my wife and I about crashed we were laughing so hard.

We still joke about it with him.... good times

Cecil, that thing about letting them choose is totally 100% true. My daughter is that way with music. If it were up to me, I'd have her all over the guitar like her daddy, but she's in love with this $200 cheapy drumset I bought. I just let her go, and now she's a damn fine drummer at the age of 5!

Speaking of daughters, I need to teach mine to ride so we can have a daughter vs. daughter shootout. Your kid might whoop my kid's ass though. She looks like she knows what she's doing.
