6 drivers charged with racing on area highways
Six men, including a father and son, were arrested in three separate incidents over the weekend on charges of racing on the highway. All were issued traffic citations.
Officials say the arrests are an attempt to curb the year-round racing that goes on in Pinellas.
The first group of arrests occurred Saturday at 11:38 p.m. on the Bayside Bridge. Three motorcycles - including a black Suzuki GSXR 1000 and a Honda CBR 1000 RR - got onto the southbound portion of the bridge from Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard and began traveling faster than 110 mph, said Sgt. Richard Nalven, supervisor of selective traffic control for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Traffic eventually slowed the motorcyclists down, giving deputies patrolling the bridge a chance to make the arrests, sheriff's spokesman Mac McMullen said.
Arrested were Brian Haakinson, 41, and his son Jonathan Haakinson, 22, both of St. Petersburg, and Wolman Pacheco, 23, of Pinellas Park. All three were released from Pinellas County Jail on Sunday morning on $250 bail.

I passed them twice while they were getting arrested.

One of the consequences of such notions as "entitlements" is that people who have contributed nothing to society feel that society owes them something, apparently just for being nice enough to grace us with their presence.”

They were going faster than 110 MPH, according to who? A officer that had nothing better to do and was looking to get some quick arrests obviously. Did they get clocked going that fast or was he relying on his eyes?
I guess if your on a bike and your on a bridge you MUST be going 110+ MPH.
And on a Saturday night non-the less.
Guess if your going any speed over the speed limit and next to someone you must obviously be racing.

Racing is such a bad word, they were riding....too bad those cars got in their way.
That bridge is a trap - I ride home on it everynight, and have yet to go on it without either seeing cops, or seeing someone already pulled over - don't play on Bayside, and if you do - I hope you know the area, or have a fat wallet. : )

A few weekends ago I saw at least a dozen cops posted up on the st. pete sideof the bridge. No bikes but lots of cars pulled over. I've never seen anyone get pulled over heading north unless the cop was following them over the bridge. There's no where for them to hide on the clearwater side.

i know all to well that you don't have to be racing to be taken to jail for it...
no radar is needed and you don't even have to break the speed limit. hell it can even be in a parking lot. the law it writen to cover anything and everything. it leaves it up to the officer's judgment which no good can ever come of.
good luck to all of them.
