I think it has to do with riders riding out-side there capabilities. Know when your passing your limit.

Helmets are bulky and mess up my greasy, slicked back hair. I like to hear my bike and the wind. Something about that long stroke roar and the steady hissing of the wind in my ears that gets me excited. I know when I had a Jap bike I wasn't too incredibly happy with how it sounded, so I can understand earplugs. Short stroke engines just don't do it for me.

well i wear ear plugs for the wind noise not the sound quality. really i have always loved the sound of a high strung sport bike and race cars like F1 and the old cart days.. to me a Harley makes me cringe the same way a straight pipe mud truck does.... just really off key to me. kinda like when someone hits an wrong key while playing a song or something.

but anyways that wasn't my point at all. your killing your ears man, and from years of car systems and to much time spent at drag strips as a kid. I've done hearing tests and I'm not a 100% anymore. hell i work around jets everyday and fucking hate it because its so fucking loud, I'm never without some kinda hearing protection. no way you'd ever see me on some loud ass bike with no helmet.

you will care one day when there's a ringing in your ears that won't go away.

you really care that much about your hair??? thats kinda gay isn't it.

My hearing is pretty shot already from the rock music, loud bikes, loud cars, etc... I don't think it'll sway me from enjoying the sound of the wind though. I do a lot of other things that aren't good for me either, but who cares?

Now, back on topic, regarding the sport bikes, I doubt they're all designed with 120mph in mind. Sure, they're designed around bikes that do this on the track, but let's be honest, the Honda you see Racer X riding at 120 through the curves is the cream of the crop. I strongly doubt it's a random one off of the assembly line.

really they are that good these days..

and as for the race bikes, these new bike turn better lap times than the true all out race bike of just a few years ago. because these have all the parts that were race only back then..

take the new R1 LE... it has a set of forks straight out of the racing catalogs.... i heard the 3k aftermarket ones are not as good.

new bikes will lap a track all day straight out of the box..... and there is why older bikes lose value where your harleys don't. its because every 2 years in the sport bike world is like night and day. this years race bike will be owned by a $10k street bike 3 years from now. where harley has been selling the same crap to people for 30 years and no one cares. its good enough to ride around and thats about all they ask. well that and chrome

I remember seeing a guy on speed channel a couple of years ago that was running a stock R6 and he was in the top 15 all day long. He even had the stock license plate holder/mudflap on the thing.
