12 year old rider joins #1 Pro team
Racers son researches rules and proves himself at seasons opener
Huntsville, Alabama - What do you do when the nation's #1 street bike rider is your Dad, and you think you know a rule better than him? You had better do your homework and you better be right.
Take Sean Henson of Davie, Florida for instance. The 12 year old son of 2004 AMA/Prostar Streetbike Shootout champ/record holder Barry Henson spent most of his walking years watching his father break records, and make hundreds of passes down the drag strip. He soon found himself helping out on his fathers Velocity Racing team.
Over the winter, Sean studied the American Motorcyclist Association's, PROSTAR Motorcycle Drag Racing rulebook, and saw that riders between the age of 12 and 16 were eligible to race the series. The provisions included the fact that they would be limited to motorcycles with power less than 250CC. His father asked him to prove it, and he delivered. Soon after, the elder Henson delivered himself. This time with a Kawasaki 250 Ninja, and some lessons from the man himself.
At the season opener Buddy Gregg AMA/Prostar Nationals in Valdosta, GA this weekend, Sean took seat the Silver, fuel powered upgrade for a pedal vehicle at his first national event. Sean's 14sec quarter miles at 90mph are less than half of his fathers 7sec at 200mph+. This being faster than most people will go in a lifetime, let alone the fact that this one handled the bike so well the 3000 spectators knew no different.
Sean earned a spot on the prestigious Velocity Team, and now instead of just handing wrenches and making trips to the snack bar his new tasks will include keeping his own machine in order, as well as adding points to the team's results.
"I saw a racer wearing Velocity Racing leathers, and saw he was riding a 250 Ninja," said a Prostar staff member, "I assumed they were testing some new engine or tune-up, because the rider launched like the rest the team does. He held the throttle at a scream then launched and shifted through all the bikes gears without slowing the engine down. All the time, keeping the front wheel just feathering the ground without picking it up in the air". Curious, the staff member took a walk over to see what was going on, only to have the young Henson greet him with the mannerism of a pro, give him a look at the bike, and fill him in on how he got to where he is.
Who knows? Hopefully the young Henson may inspire other parents with a motorcycle passion to share it with their 12 year olds. AMA/Prostar has given them a place to race and ride legally, and tribute Sean for taking advantage of being the youngest racer they can remember for at least what they say is, "a very long time'".

One of the consequences of such notions as "entitlements" is that people who have contributed nothing to society feel that society owes them something, apparently just for being nice enough to grace us with their presence.”

He was right in there with all of them, turning wrenches and stuff. It was pretty cool to see.
