Default Newb Bike Questions

Hey I am looking into getting a bike and all I'd like you guys to help me out here...

Ok I know you have to have a special bike license thing for like a month or something inorder to get your license...what does this consist of and how long is it actually (is there anyway the time can be cut down ?), and also do I have to know how to decently ride a bike before I enter that class ?

Next, as a beginner, what would you guys recommend for me to buy ? I mean I thought to myself that 500s and 600s are kinda too big to start with but here in the US you really can't get good 125s or 250 road bikes...so idk should I just go ahead and get a 500 or 600 ?

Thank in advance I'll probably have a few questions later on, but that's it for right now.

Oh, and please don't flame

If you are 21 or older, you can go down to the DMV and take a test (like 20 questions) and get a permit for riding a motorcycle. It lasts about a month, or maybe 3 months. If you enter into the MSF beginners course, it is just that, a course for people who have little or no experience riding a motorcycle. This course is HIGHLY recommended. Also, might want to check ths stickys at the top of the page for as far as what bike to purchase as your first bike. A ninja 250 is a good/great starter bike. You can also get "mild" 500 and 600 cc bikes as well. GS500, Katana 600 something along these lines. It is not recommended to go out and get a supersport as your first bike (R6/GSXR-600/CBR RR/ZX6R) but people do it all the time. It really depends on how much self control you have. hehe.. DogBoneR1 has a good post somewhere around here how starting on a smaller bike makes you a better rider, and I would have to agree. Learn to extract the power from the bike, instead of simply twisting the throttle on a liter bike.

My $1.75

Hope it helps...

I have a Katana 600, and it was/is my first bike...
With it you will still need a little self control, but it is quick enough to "keep up" with the big boys... ( As long ast they aren't WOT).
The Kat 600 goes 0-60 in 4 seconds, and runs a 12 second 1/4 mile. It's a little heavier than the other bikes (458 lbs) as it is a "Sport Tourer" which makes it a lot more comfy on a long ride. They are also reliable, and easy to maintain.

O cool didn't know the ninja came also in a 250 version...I think I'll get one of those btw I'm 18 what would I have to do ? I know I need a helmet and all my gear to do that bike school thing where would I sign up for it etc ? How long does it usually take ? Should I do the bike school before I get the bike ? Thanks again.

One more $ how much is insurance on bikes usually I heard it's lower than for cars...my awd tsi was $230 a month if I ended up getting an r6 or a gixxer a year or so from now, approximately how much would it be for me with full coverage ?

- Thanks again sorry for all the questions...
