CodenameAcura..... here's my advice. I think you made a good decision going with a 600 because like a lot of the guys mentioned, it will help your learning curve. However, I would recommend getting a used bike for your first bike, then after you've become completely comfortable on it, you can decide whether the 600 is for you or if you want more power. Then you can go get a new bike. You'll save A LOT of money on the 600 by doing this and also you won't have to rely completely on the advice of others. If I'm not mistaken new 600s start at around $8k before tax, but you could get a bike that's just a couple years old for around $4-5k. Normally if someone asks what bike to start out on I usually say 600... but with your riding background you will more than likely be able to handle a 750 just fine which is one reason why I think it would be really benificial for you to get a used bike and decide for yourself what is right for you.

do the smart thing and get a 600. if you want to stunt sprocket it
a 600 will do over 160. how often are you gonna be going that fast. a dirt bike a differnt animal than a street bike trust me i thought the same thing at first. But if you wanna DIE go ahead and get a 1000. Oh ya sit no all the bikes in the class before you spend $10,000 on something thats not comfortable.

Default My situation

Well i will throw in my .02 i fully agree with most people on here that say a 600 has more than enough power to enjoy. I on the other hand am not happy with the power a 600 has to offer main reason i have been riding for awile and i have gotta used to the power and cornering capabilities. The bike hasent changed it just takes alot more to get that adrenaline rush you get when you first get on it. I can also chalk it up to the fact that i am 6'3" 300lbs that greatly affects the capabilities on a 600cc bike.
Just my .02
