Fresh from its Le Mans win, Ford developed a new, road-faring version of the GT40, the Mk III. They planned for a 20-car run, but only seven were built. This is one of those seven, and the example Ford used to promote the GT40 Mk III.



Ford unveiled the GT40 Mk III with this car during a tour of Nieman Marcus department stores in Texas. After that, various publications (such as Car and Driver) took turns with the car before it appeared at the New York Motor Show. In 1968, the GT40 returned to the U.K. with John Willment Automobiles for full conversion to the Mk III spec. During transit back to the U.S., another GT40 fell on it, damaging its roof. In 1973, a new owner took possession and repaired the car.



In recent years, the GT40 was reunited with its original 302 engine. Since then, the Ford podiumed in its class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and won car of the week at Retromobile and Salon Prive.
