Kyle Busch and Clint Bowyer will be without their crew chiefs in Saturday night’s playoff race at Richmond Raceway.

Adam Stevens, of Busch’s No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing team, and Johnny Klausmeier, of Bowyer’s No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing team, will each serve a one-race suspension in addition to being fined $20,000. The penalty stems from there being two lug nuts not safe and secure on their respective race cars after the Southern 500 in Darlington.

Jacob Canter will serve as Busch’s interim in the Federated Auto Parts 400. The winless Busch is 10th on the playoff grid, seven points above the cutline.

Greg Zipadelli, the competition director of SHR, will serve as Bowyer’s interim crew chief. It will be the second time this season Zipadelli has filled in for Klausmeier because of a lug nut penalty, the other race being one month ago at Michigan.

Bowyer is tied with teammate Aric Almirola for the final spot on the playoff grid.

Other penalties assessed for Darlington include two other crew chiefs fined for having one lug nut not safe and secure. Race-winning crew chief Rodney Childers with Kevin Harvick’s team and Chad Knaus of William Byron’s team were each fined $10,000.

In the Truck Series, Kevin Bellicourt, the crew chief for Derek Kraus, was fined $2,500 for one lug nut not being safe and secure on the No. 19 truck.

Six crew chiefs from the Cup Series and one each from the Xfinity and Camping World Truck series were fined by NASCAR for improperly secured lug nuts following the weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

One of those eight – Mike Shiplett, crew chief on Cole Custer’s Stewart-Haas Racing No. 41 (which finished a lap down in 25th) – was fined $20,000 and suspended from this weekend’s Cup Series race at Phoenix.

Chase Elliott has been disqualified after Sunday’s race at Nashville Superspeedway because of five loose lug nuts on his Chevrolet during post-race inspection.

Elliott will receive one point and placed last (39th) in the Ally 400 finishing order. He also loses the playoff point earned for winning the race’s first stage, and Kurt Busch will be credited with winning the stage.

Larson continues summer dominance with Nashville win [UPDATED]

The No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports team crossed the finish line 13th. Elliott nursed his car to the finish after complaining of a potential loose wheel inside the final 25 laps. Running fifth at the time, Elliott chose not to pit but could not maintain his position.

“It’s unfortunate,” said Chad Knaus, vice president of competition at Hendrick Motorsports. “The lug nuts on the No. 9 were loose at the end of the race. At the end of the race Chase had a vibration. There were quite a few tire issues through the course of the day so they were hopeful that it was just a cord or something in the tire that was creating the vibration so they chose to run the race out. It’s unfortunate that the lug nuts vibrated loose on the left rear and now we are sitting here with a disqualification for the 9 team.”

No other penalties are expected for Elliott.

Martin Truex Jr.’s Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota had one loose lug nut after the race. Truex’s crew chief, James Small, will be fined $10,000.

NASCAR issued only one post-event penalty following Road America weekend for the Xfinity Series and Cup Series, a one-race suspension for Stewart-Haas Racing crew chief Johnny Klausmeier.

Two lug nuts not secure on Chase Briscoe’s No. 14 Ford Mustang will sideline Klausmeier this weekend. Briscoe, a rookie, rebounded from an early pit road penalty and finished sixth in the Jockey Made in America 250. The result tied his career-best finish in the NASCAR Cup Series. Klausmeier was also fined $20,000.

Michael Cook will serve as Briscoe’s crew chief this weekend in the Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
