[h=2]Hamlin's Michigan Xfinity win ruled encumbered[/h] Wednesday, 21 June 2017

Denny Hamlin's win in the Xfinity Series race at Michigan International Speedway has been ruled encumbered by NASCAR.

Wednesday, the sanctioning body handed down its post-race penalties with the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing team being issued an L1-level penalty because the splitter was not flat. With the win being encumbered, the team – which is competing for the owner's championship - cannot use the points for the Xfinity Series playoffs.

Crew chief Chris Gabehart has been fined $25,000 and suspended for the next two Xfinity Series races (Iowa and Daytona).
An additional penalty from the Xfinity Series was issued to the No. 00 Cole Custer team for lug nuts that were not properly installed. Crew chief Jeff Meendering has been fined $5,000 for the safety violation.
In the Camping World Truck Series, which competed at Gateway Motorsports Park, Austin Hill's team was issued an L1-level penalty. Hill's 14th-place finish is encumbered after the No. 02 truck did not meet post-race height requirements.
Crew chief Bruce Cook has been fined $5,000 and suspended for the next two truck series races (Iowa Speedway and Kentucky Speedway). The team has also been docked 10 driver and owner points.
There were no penalties for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

[h=2]Johnson avoids pit violation penalty[/h] Sunday, 08 October 2017

By Kelly Crandall / Image by Rusty Jarrett/LAT

Jimmie Johnson did not face a penalty when his pit crew serviced the No. 48 Chevrolet outside the pit box Sunday afternoon as lug nuts are a safety issue.

Under caution on Lap 280 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Johnson began to leave his pit when crew chief Chad Knaus told him to stop. Although Johnson backed up, he was still outside his box when the front tire changer either had to tighten or replace a lug nut on the left-front wheel.
NASCAR spokesmen Kurt Colbert said after the race the penalty in a situation like this is the team having a slow stop. Furthermore, it is something he said the sanctioning body has allowed all year.
And even though the NASCAR rule book states pitting outside the box is a one lap penalty, that does not apply here because "the penalty is incurred because they've had to fix it instead of going onto the track and having to deal with a penalty come Tuesday. ... It's in the interest of safety."

Teams who lose a tire on the track because of unsecured lug nuts face automatic fines and suspensions. Kyle Busch's crew chief and other key members of his team were issued four-week suspensions for that happening in the June race at Dover.
There are also penalties for teams who finish the race and are found with unsecure lug nuts. However, Johnson admitted Sunday he and his team knew there would be no penalty for what happened on pit road. A few weeks ago at New Hampshire a similar thing happened and NASCAR clarified for them then it would not be considered pitting outside the box.
"If we would have known there was [going to be] another caution we would just go and run and then come back in and put all your lug nuts back on and you're fine," Johnson said. "To go to the end, you get nervous and don't want to get fined."
Although he lost his track position, Johnson, who was the defending winner at Charlotte, recovered to finish seventh.

Chase Elliott Penalized After NASCAR Fans Spot Sketchy Behavior On TV by Dakota Randall.

Chase Elliott and the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports team learned the hard way that cameras — and fans — are always watching. After finishing runner-up in Sunday’s Tales of the Turtles 400 at Chicagoland Speedway, Elliott did a post-race interview, during which some very observant NASCAR fans saw a crew member apparently removing tape from the No. 24’s spoiler. Well, they clearly were on to something, as Elliott’s team was hit with an L1 penalty for “modification of components to affect the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle,” NASCAR announced Tuesday.

Here’s video of team’s shady behavior after the race: The craziest part about all of this is the potentially large role the internet played in busting Elliott’s crew. On Monday, Reddit user ClarksonianPause started a thread on /r/NASCAR that included videos of the incident. Furthermore, the Redditor claimed they spoke to someone inside the garage who witnessed a crew member applying the tape, which they said added an extra 30 – 50 pounds of downforce.

A slew of fans commented on the thread, which some in the sport believe caught NASCAR’s attention. Now, while the Reddit post might’ve helped NASCAR bust Elliott’s crew for one infraction, multiple aerodynamic manipulations actually were found in the No. 24, Motorsport.com reported Tuesday. In any event, the penalty definitely hurts the team’s hopes of winning the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship.

In addition to Elliott’s second-place finish being encumbered, crew chief Alan Gustafson was fined $25,000 and was suspended for Sunday’s ISM Connect 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Car chief Joshua Kirk also was suspended for the playoff race, and the No. 24 team was docked 15 driver points and 15 owner points. Elliott dropped form sixth to eighth in the playoff standings. Allgaier's crew chief suspended for Xfinity finale

Monday, 13 November 2017

Justin Allgaier likely will be without crew chief Jason Burdett as he races for the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship this weekend.

Anticipating a potential appeal from JR Motorsports, an expedited penalty report was announced by NASCAR on Monday morning after the No. 7 Chevrolet failed post-race inspection at Phoenix Raceway. The violation was a brake cooling hose being unattached.

Under section 20.15.2.2 Rear Brake Cooling of the NASCAR Rule Book, the rear brake cooling assemblies must be sealed from air inlet to exhaust.
JRM has been issued an L1-level penalty.

Burdett (pictured at left with Allgaier) has been suspended from the next Xfinity Series race and fined $10,000 while Allgaier's 10th-place finish has been ruled encumbered. The team has also been docked 10 driver and owner points.

The penalty does not affect Allgaier's standing in the Championship 4.

Last year, Allgaier's teammate Elliott Sadler raced without his crew chief at Homestead because of two unsecured lug nuts following the Phoenix race.

Kyle Busch and Clint Bowyer will be without their crew chiefs in Saturday night’s playoff race at Richmond Raceway.

Adam Stevens, of Busch’s No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing team, and Johnny Klausmeier, of Bowyer’s No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing team, will each serve a one-race suspension in addition to being fined $20,000. The penalty stems from there being two lug nuts not safe and secure on their respective race cars after the Southern 500 in Darlington.

Jacob Canter will serve as Busch’s interim in the Federated Auto Parts 400. The winless Busch is 10th on the playoff grid, seven points above the cutline.

Greg Zipadelli, the competition director of SHR, will serve as Bowyer’s interim crew chief. It will be the second time this season Zipadelli has filled in for Klausmeier because of a lug nut penalty, the other race being one month ago at Michigan.

Bowyer is tied with teammate Aric Almirola for the final spot on the playoff grid.

Other penalties assessed for Darlington include two other crew chiefs fined for having one lug nut not safe and secure. Race-winning crew chief Rodney Childers with Kevin Harvick’s team and Chad Knaus of William Byron’s team were each fined $10,000.

In the Truck Series, Kevin Bellicourt, the crew chief for Derek Kraus, was fined $2,500 for one lug nut not being safe and secure on the No. 19 truck.
