Default RACER #296: IMSA's Next Golden Age

RACER #296: IMSA's Next Golden Age

500 sharessharetweetemail
By: RACER Staff | February 25, 2019 6:00 PM Sponsored Content: IMSA For its 50th birthday, IMSA received a couple of cool presents – a new television partner in NBC Sports and a new tire partner in Michelin. Both of these are part of long-term agreements that, along with title partner WeatherTech and 19 different auto makers participating, herald a bright future for IMSA as it begins its next half-century. IMSA President Scott Atherton states that fans are going to be treated to the next golden age of American sports car racing. He should know, he’s been in a leadership role across various forms of the series and has witnessed some of its best, and darkest, moments.IMSA’s first golden age began to show signs of decline around 1993, and soon after went into a near-death spin. But in 1998, salvation arrived as Jim France and Dr. Don Panoz stepped in with separate visions for what sports car racing in America should be. For over a decade the two series co-existed at arm’s length, each enjoying some success, but also some rough patches that challenged the fortitude of all involved, including Atherton. One such moment came on Thanksgiving Day in 2008.“I was at home getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving when my mobile phone rings with a call from Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich of Audi Sport, and I think, ‘Wow, how nice. He’s calling to wish me a Happy Thanksgiving.’ As it turned out, he’d forgotten that it was a holiday for us, and instead of good tidings, he informed me that Audi was out of the ALMS with immediate effect,” says Atherton, recalling that he spent the rest of the holiday in a virtual fog.The American Le Mans Series had the proverbial rug pulled out from under it that year. Over the course of the next four seasons, “both series thrived, but neither could survive” as a standalone entity, according to Atherton. In 2012, the two sides came to the table, and this time France and Panoz went from separate visions to a united front. A new, consolidated series was born that took the best elements from each to build something newer and stronger.“IMSA’s in the best position it’s ever been” says Atherton. “We have a leadership team in lockstep, the resources and support of the France family, and an extremely high level of professionalism among our staff, teams and drivers. We have a peerless roster of manufacturer, commercial and promoter partners. We have a strong, stable schedule, and our on-track content is exciting, relevant and aspirational. The level of competition is as tight as it’s ever been.“In the near future there will be two major motion pictures where sports car racing is central to the story, and one of them, ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain,’ features IMSA content in all of the racing scenes. So we have an unprecedented opportunity to showcase our sport to a general audience,” he continues. “We’re an exponentially better organization today than we’ve ever been, and we’re continuing to find ways where we can raise the bar ever higher.” In terms of what we fans can most look forward to this season, Atherton is unequivocal.“The TV package with NBC Sports is a game changer,” he says. “Their commitment and passion to televising this sport with live, flag-to-flag coverage of every race on every type of apparatus from a phone, to a tablet, to a laptop, to a television set will make an immediate positive impression on our fans.”Moreover, Atherton believes that the basic premise upon which sports car racing was founded is alive and well, which keeps the sport anchored to its roots, while also keeping pace with the times.“You race to improve the breed, and that sentiment is as true today as it was at IMSA’s beginning,” states Atherton. “As reliable as vehicles are today, the pace at which we now run still puts an enormous strain and stress on man and machine. Now, as before, endurance racing has so many aspects that test the limits of performance. That could be engine reliability, energy efficiency or the ability for a tire to perform at its peak over a longer duration – these things are still very much a part of what endurance racing delivers to manufacturers and competitors. Our teams and drivers are going flat-out over as much as 24 hours, and if there’s a technical issue, a bad pit stop, or a mistake, their race is effectively over. So while the technique of sports car racing has evolved over the years, the basic premise remains firmly intact.” After 50 years, is it possible that IMSA’s best is yet to come? It’s not only possible, it’s probable. So buy a ticket or pull up a chair with your viewing device of choice, because IMSA’s next golden age is upon us.

Default Bennett Sweeps Historic IMSA Race at Acura GP of Long Beach Montrose, CA

Bennett Sweeps Historic IMSA Race at Acura GP of Long Beach

Montrose, CA — Craig Bennett of Milford, Mich., swept qualifying and Saturday’s Historic IMSA GTO Challenge race, sanctioned by the Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA), in his 1990 Nissan 300ZX at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.

It was Bennett’s second historics win at Long Beach — a follow-up to an emotional win in 2017 that marked his return to racing after a serious 2016 accident at Road Atlanta.

Joel Miller of Irvine, Calif., finished 2nd in his 1991 Mazda RX-7 and Escondido’s Ken Davis rounded out the top three in his 1985 Ford Mustang.

“The fun part about what I get to do is drive with Joel and the rest of these great drivers,” Bennett said. “I knew the best opportunity I was going to have to win would be driving through traffic and managing the race.”

HMSA President Cris Vandagriff has overseen the vintage portion of the popular Southern California tradition nine times and said 2019 was an exciting race enjoyed by many — especially the racers.

“There are always a ton of moving pieces to running a race of this magnitude, but everyone had a great time and the racing was very exciting,” Vandagriff said. “The racers provided some incredible competition and it seems like every time Craig Bennett shows up for this race, he wins, but the other racers made him work for it.”

The cars in the Historic IMSA GTO Challenge were required to be period-correct race cars from 1980 through 1991 — helping to celebrate this year’s 50th anniversary of IMSA.

Default Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of IMSA as Featured

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of IMSA as Featured Marque

MONTEREY, Calif., November 19, 2018 – The 2019 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is 269 days away, yet plans are already in high gear as the seven-person selection committee has been finalizing the 14 run groups. An anticipated 1,000 entry requests are expected to be received for the limited 550 grid positions that race August 15-18, 2019 at Monterey County’s legendary WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. And when the entries are in, that’s when the selection committee takes on the formidable task of evaluating each car for its documented race history, authentic livery and mechanical presentation to the day it raced.

Photographed at the 2018 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, Bob Akin’s No. 5 Porsche 962 was one of the most recognizable and popular cars in the heyday of the IMSA GTP era with its bright red paint scheme, proudly carrying Coca-Cola sponsorship. (photo: Bob Heathcote)

The run groups evolved slightly for 2019 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), which is the year’s featured marque. It is the first time a racing series has been so honored and will provide a dynamic atmosphere in the paddock with an unprecedented variety of cars with past and present racing personalities from throughout IMSA’s rich history.

IMSA is the featured marque this year as they celebrate their 50th anniversary.
Each year, the Monterey Pre-Reunion serves as the proverbial warm-up to the bustling car week and Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion ahead. The event is a chance for the drivers and cars to acclimate and ready for the big show the following week… and of course have some great fun while doing so.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Accepts 500-Plus Historic Race Cars for 14 Groups IMSA 50th anniversary gearing up for August 15-18 international race gathering

Event News April 5, 2019
The Camel Grand Prix IMSA race in 1992 saw Davy Jones (2) in a Jaguar XJR-14 leading Juan Manuel Fangio II (99) in an AAR Toyota Eagle Mk III through the Corkscrew. Fangio and Jones battled the entire race until Fangio slipped past Jones for the win, while the Jaguar and Jones fell to a close third. Fangio averaged 104.02 mph over the 94-lap 208.12 mile race.

The coveted letters of acceptance into the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion have been issued to owners of some of the world’s most historic race cars to compete August 15-18 at Monterey County’s WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. More than 500 historic and period-correct race cars will be competing in 14 groups that span 103 years of motorsports. The earliest cars racing in the pre-war group are a 1911 National Speedway Roadster and 1911 Fiat S74, while the endurance group features a more modern 2014 Lola Toyota Rebellion LMP1 prototype.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), this year’s featured marque, historic IMSA cars are taking center stage. With an abundance of noteworthy cars applying, the highly qualified seven-person Selection Committee had difficult choices to make.

More than 145 IMSA cars were accepted into four IMSA-focused groups. Some of the greatest cars in IMSA history will be racing and include 1991 AAR Toyota Eagle MkIII, Porsche 935s, 1976 Dekon Monzas, Greenwood Corvettes, Riley and Scott Mk IIIs, and Mazda GTO, GTU and GTP cars, among the many.

What began as the sanctioning body for a Formula Ford and Formula Vee race at Pocono Raceway in October 1969 has grown over five decades to become an international auto racing powerhouse specializing in world-class sports car competition. Thus, Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion organizers will run a full field of Formula Fords, which was the spark to IMSA’s beginnings.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which was bestowed with the prestigious 2017 FIA Founding Members Club Heritage Cup, and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance are the cornerstones of the famed Monterey Classic Car Week. Last year, 67,128 car enthusiasts attended the races over the four days. Racing also kicks-off the week as the Monterey Pre-Reunion attracts 300 historic racing cars August 10 and 11.

There will be an abundance of book signings, interviews with Grand Marshal Hurley Haywood and other driving greats, car shows, demonstration laps, a marketplace full of exhibitors and a special tribute to the 100th anniversary of Bentley. This is in addition to the open paddock with rows after rows filled with significant cars from motorsport history, including a full grid of historic Formula one cars that ran between 1966 and 1985.

Mika Häkkinen to Drive the Historic 1970 McLaren M8D Can-Am ‘Batmobile’ at Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Event News June 19, 2019

20 years after earning his second consecutive Formula One drivers’ championship, Mika Häkkinen will demonstrate his considerable driving talents behind the wheel of the 1970 McLaren M8D/3 “Batmobile” at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion on August 15-18 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

American racing legend Dan Gurney and British Formula One driver Peter Gethin each raced the “Batmobile” during the 1970 Can-Am season as teammates to Denny Hulme following the tragic loss of Bruce McLaren. Gurney drove it during the first three races of the season, winning twice from the pole position at Mosport and Mont-Tremblant. Gethin raced the car seven times, scoring a victory at Road America along with two other podiums. The car was used as a spare for Bruce McLaren Motor Racing drivers Peter Revson and Denny Hulme in 1971 and was in privateer hands from 1972 to 1974.

The vivid papaya-colored race car is powered by a roaring 7.6-liter Chevrolet engine. The high strut-mounted rear wing of its predecessor – the M8B – had been banned by Can-Am, so the M8D’s rear wing was mounted low on fins, earning the car’s “Batmobile” nickname.

The McLaren team dominated the 1970 season with nine wins in the 10-round championship. McLaren drivers Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme and Peter Revson had won five straight Can-Am championships from 1967 to 1971.

This will mark the third consecutive year that Häkkinen, who had not previously driven at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, will make demonstration laps at Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. He drove the 1974 McLaren M23 in 2017 and the 1995 McLaren F1 GTR in 2018.

“This track is fun, really enjoyable,” said Häkkinen. “The track goes up and down, and some of the corners have great camber. It looks tighter than it is from a distance, so you need a lot of guts to brake later and take the right line.”
