Hard to believe.....50 years.....
I remember when myself and some autocrossers prepped a Ford Pinto and took it to Road Atlanta.
Those were simpler times.
The founder of IMSA, John Bishop, drove an AMC Gremlin donated by BF Goodrich (the series sponsor) and was painted appropriately.
--------------

At one time the IMSA headquarters was in the 2nd floor of a building on Henderson Blvd approximately across from Outback restaurant.
--------------------

We knew it was all over for our autocross Pinto when Car and Driver magazine took a Pinto to Daytona "built from stuff we had laying around"
that included a Ford 9 inch real end...same as NASCAR uses in full size stock cars...
..and an engine built in the shop of drag racing legend Keith Black. Car and Driver ran only one race, and the Pinto went to race ACALAM
in Miami. Alex Job also raced ACALAM but went on to become more famous racing Porsches in the American Le Mans Series.
------------------

There were two brothers from Tampa that raced AMC Gremlins, I don't recall the names at the time....
and since IMSA measured ride height from the CENTER of the rocker panel,
they tilted the cars front end down to where the nose drug the ground and the back end was tilted up...meeting the rules......
and producing HUGE downforce. They had inline 6 cylinders with stock intakes so big, you could roll a golf ball down the ports.
And then AMC "updated" the six cylinder engine to bigger cubic inches.

I recall that when they ran 1-2 into the infield turn one at Daytona on the first lap, they had a huge lead.
The next year IMSA said the rocker panels had to have the same ride height front and rear.
and the imports started winning more races. IMSA has come a long way.
---------------

I drove a street/autocross Gremlin that won over 90% of it's races.....and discovered that by lowering the rear end
by 1", it would bring the rear end around while pointing the front to the inside of an autocross turn. I was also racing
sailboats at the time and added a "very strong trailer hitch" to the back end....which did not hurt when I had to sling the back end
out in the tight turns.

The year that the Florida State Autocross Championship was held in a big USF parking lot at the engineering building, It upset some people that I borrowed
the trophy to take my picture on Saturday and then won it on Sunday. I had taken contact paper and made an AMC emblem
for the door which contained my racing number. AMC did not send me any money. LOL
--------------

Bruce Morehead (who is still around in SCCA, and still shows up for the plant city car shows ) raced an AMC AMX at Sebring 12,hour races.
When he qualified for the 12 hour, he asked American Motors Corp if they would contribute something toward his racing effort.

AMC sent him a cardboard box that had some Red, White, and Blue AMC racing jackets.
It was a simpler time.
----------------------

Later on, AMC spent millions with Roger Penske to race an AMC Matador in NASCAR.
AMC streamlined the car and made 4 bolt wheels an option. Mark Donohue was Penske's driver.

4 bolt wheels could be changed 20% faster than 5 bolts during a pit stop.... lol

Would love for IMSA to do full features like this. More insight, more intimate documentaries following teams, etc. A small group of cinematographers could handle this task. I could have a crew of 2 and do amazing things, for the marketing of IMSA, giving immediate ROI. Fans want insight...in car views, pit lane...you know that much, take it a step further...inside the teams, backstory, lead up, etc. One small crew, with access, could make it happen, edit it and you could reach a whole new audience. IMSA unveils 50th anniversary plans, logo

IMSA unveils 50th anniversary plans, logo

By: RACER Staff August 3, 2018 5:23 PM What began as the sanctioning body for a Formula Ford and Formula Vee race at Pocono Raceway in October 1969 has grown over five decades to become an international auto racing powerhouse specializing in world-class sports car competition, and next year, the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) turns 50.To commemorate the golden anniversary, IMSA and stakeholders including series partners, manufacturers, teams, drivers, event promoters and fans will join together in a season-long 50th Anniversary celebration that will begin with the 2019 Rolex 24 At Daytona on the weekend of Jan. 24-27 and will carry all the way through to the season-ending Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on Oct. 11-13.“Almost 50 years ago, Bill France Sr. and John and Peggy Bishop laid a foundation that today supports one of the most prominent auto racing organizations in the world,” said IMSA President Scott Atherton. “The story of IMSA over the past five decades is truly fascinating and will be told throughout our 2019 50th Anniversary celebration in several ways by a variety of stakeholders.

“From historic race car liveries and commemorative logos to many other surprises throughout the season for fans at-track and watching through our new-for-2019 partnership with NBC Sports, it will be a year-long celebration for all to enjoy.”

A key component of the celebration is the official 50th Anniversary IMSA logo that was publicly unveiled for the first time this evening as part of the State of the Series presentation at Road America. The logo – which will be featured on items such as uniforms, race car liveries and commemorative merchandise in 2019 – incorporates many elements of the traditional IMSA logo, including the 27-degree angle from vertical center and the familiar “apex arrow” that has long been a part of IMSA’s brand identity.

Enhancing the logo is the use of gold to signify IMSA’s “golden” anniversary, as well as laurels that symbolize excellence, honor and victory. A secondary commemorative logo, which replaces the standard red in the current IMSA logo with gold and features the addition of “Est. 1969” also was unveiled and will be used throughout 2019 in selected applications as well.

IMSA will be centering its celebration around four cornerstones — “Drivers and Teams,” “Tracks,” “Manufacturers” and “Fans.” These pillars will be highlighted at 2019 events and will have a presence the entire season as the foundation of what has made IMSA what it is today.

Default IMSA to feature at 2019 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

IMSA to feature at 2019 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

By: Marshall Pruett | 23 hours ago WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is taking a fresh approach to nominating the featured brand for its annual Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. IMSA, which celebrates its 50th anniversary as a sanctioning body in 2019, will be the central focus for the award-winning vintage racing festival. After decades of selecting auto manufacturers as the key draw to the Monterey event, IMSA’s appeal through generations of fans who watched GTP, GTO, GTU, GT, and other classes race around the 2.2-mile road course, under IMSA sanction during the American Le Mans Series era, and more recently under the reformed IMSA banner, should pack the house.

“To be the featured marque of the 2019 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion will be one of the many highlights of our 50th anniversary next year,” said IMSA President Scott Atherton. “IMSA’s long history at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca has spanned over five decades and we are flattered to be among the premier brands that have shared this honor over the years. I can assure you the whole of IMSA – teams, drivers, sponsors and staff are looking forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary with an unprecedented gathering next year of cars and stars from IMSA’s past and present.”

Set for August15-18, more than 500 vintage racing cars will give sports car and open-wheel fans plenty to enjoy next year on the California coast.

“Celebrating the achievements and history of IMSA on the occasion of its 50th anniversary is fitting for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion,” said Timothy McGrane, CEO of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “IMSA and our facility have long been intertwined and we look forward to working with the team to create a dynamic and entertaining weekend experience for all to enjoy.”
