A large paddock of vintage racers were eager to get on track yesterday to kick off SVRA’s Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio. A late announcement last week allows spectators for the Speedtour event weekend that features Trans Am and F4 U.S. and FR Americas racing as well. VM’s ace photographer Bill Stoler is on-site this weekend to provide some wonderful imagery for all to enjoy.

SVRA, SOVREN Confirm Sept. 5-6 for Portland Vintage Racing Festival

Southlake, TX — Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) announced last week that its Portland Vintage Racing Festival, originally scheduled for July 23-26, will take place Sept. 5-6 at Portland International Raceway in company with SOVREN’s Columbia River Classic. The Labor Day weekend will also include the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli West Coast Series, originally planned for July 24-26 at PIR.
Photo: SVRA“Like everyone, we are navigating a challenging environment, so we adjust to deliver what is best for everyone involved,” said Tony Parella, SVRA President/CEO and majority owner of the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli. “I think we have arrived at a great solution. Andy Collins and the team at SOVERN have been terrific partners in our Portland Vintage Racing Festivals, and I know they will deliver a successful event.”

“We are extremely excited about this new approach and greatly appreciate Tony’s confidence in us,” said SOVERN President Andy Collins. “I want the racing community to know this will be the only vintage races at PIR this year, so this is the big opportunity for racers in the Pacific Northwest. Plus, we get to run with Trans Am — how cool is that?”

Because of their proximity to PIR, SOVERN will sanction the vintage races during the weekend.

 

SVRA “SpeedTour All Access” debuts Sunday on MAVTV

Sportscar Vintage Racing Association has announced that its first-ever TV show will premiere this Sunday, August 2, on MAVTV at 9:30 a.m.

In all, there will be eight airings of four episodes throughout August. In addition to the August 2 premiere the other episodes will be presented at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on August 9, 16, 23, and 30.

“This is the culmination of a lot of work to build the SVRA and SpeedTour brands,” said Tony Parella, SVRA CEO and majority owner of the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli. “Since I acquired SVRA in 2012 all of my team has worked diligently to build a special national platform that provides a unique and diverse auto racing option for fans, competitors, and sponsors alike. Trans Am has a strong history of television coverage and we are bringing SVRA and everything about SpeedTour weekends into the mainstream motorsports conversation.”

Each episode presents two-to-three storylines following drivers and teams throughout a SpeedTour weekend. Episodes focus on the Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway weekends from 2019, as well as Sebring in 2020. While the focus is SVRA, all aspects of SpeedTour are incorporated into the presentations.

The MAVTV series is the latest extension of SVRA’s effort to expand video coverage of vintage racing. In March SVRA rolled out a full-service digital media platform to provide live SpeedTour coverage. Fans around the globe can enjoy live competition through free streaming media to their phones, and computers. Free downloads of the enabling apps are available for both Apple and Android. Love coverage is also available through the SVRA YouTube channel.

Entries higher than expected for CSRG Oct. 2-4 Charity Challenge

Entries for Classic Sports Racing Group’s Charity Challenge this weekend have topped 200, exceeding even what group leader Locke de Bretteville had considered would be an “amazing” response.

“We have close to 80 more cars registered for Saturday and Sunday racing than what we had estimated,” de Bretteville said. “I’d thought that if we got to 180-190 cars, it would be amazing, so this is definitely good news. Our number for the Friday Test Day is also higher than we anticipated.”

Event officials are continuing to monitor the Sonoma-Napa County wildfires, and said that as of Tuesday evening, the fires seem to be moving away, not toward, the town of Sonoma and the track.

“Also, the Air Quality Index, as unpredictable as it can be, looks okay for the weekend,” event organizer Petey Thornton said. “The track has a cut-off point for that, but at present, we are far below that point.”

SVRA announces 17-race 2021 schedule

The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association has announced a 17-race schedule for 2021, affirming its resilience in the face of the pandemic-produced global business challenges. SVRA notes that its vintage racing, contemporary sports cars, and other features present the most diverse and exciting array of race car design and engine sounds in the world, and the organization continues to generate growth in sponsorship and membership.

The 2021 schedule boasts 17 SpeedTour race weekends, a record number in SVRA’s 42-year history. New to the schedule are Charlotte Motor Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Brainerd International Raceway, and Utah Motorsports Campus.

The schedule also includes an unprecedented number of West Coast events starting with Auto Club Speedway in February. Also, West Coast weekends will include a return, after a three-year hiatus to Sonoma Raceway, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, and Portland International Raceway.

Most races will be live-streamed on the SVRA app.

Another feature of the schedule is its design to allow racers a single tow between tracks within the same region on successive weekends. The approach provides SVRA members with a convenient and economical way to plan a vacation road trip over two weekends. “Single Tow” weekends begin in February with Sebring International Raceway and Homestead; continue in March with Charlotte and Road Atlanta; and then again between Laguna Seca and Sonoma in April.

“I could not be more pleased with how my team has risen to the challenges of 2020,” said SVRA CEO Tony Parella. “We navigated a gauntlet, and we are determined to deliver a new season and return to normal weekends as much as possible. So many of our fans have contacted us about attending our SpeedTour races, and we look forward to the day we can welcome them back at every venue.”

Notably missing from the expanded schedule is the Brickyard Invitational held since 2014 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Parella explains that he built the event around the Vintage Race of Champions (VROC), which is now on hold due to fan-attendance uncertainty.

“We built the Brickyard Invitational around Pro-Am racing,” says Parella. “Our first-ever Pro-Am occurred at IMS in 2014, and we need that element for the weekend to make sense. I will be regrouping with the IMS team in January to explore options in 2022.”
