I did an event there at PBIR in late 2007. It was a night event and very wet, very slippy, but lot's O fun, in a rear wheel drive car with street tires. I will try to make it.

If ya didn't come, you missed a good time, and a decent turnout of 21 drivers. Just got home a bit ago... the car was awesome, I was mediocre, and the back half of the course was f'ing miserably muddy and slick in the morning. It was actually very annoying... front half was pretty good, but then it was like hitting a sheet of ice the moment I'd make the turn into the back half. Luckily the course dried out a bit in the afternoon and they rearranged the barrels and cones to get it out of the deeper mud and ruts. My times dropped by 50-60 seconds per run.

Anyway, a couple pics of the XR's post-event mess:

I know you had nothing to do with this course design, but... it would be a lot more forgiving if they used the barrels on the inside and the cones on the outside. Looks like the penalty for driving "loose" here is scraped and dented rear fenders. And isn't "loose" what Rallycross is all about???

Now that you mention it, I kinda agree, but I think the reason they did it that way in that particular spot was to provide an extra amount of deterrence because the timing tent/spectator area was on the other side (at least 40 feet away). And not that it matters a bunch, but the barrels were plastic rain barrel types and not crazy brutal 50 gallon metal drums.

I hope your distance estimates are really bad. Spectators (by SCCA rules) should be a minimum of 75' from the course. Common sense says that on the outside of a turn, more than that would be prudent.

<sigh>

It didn't seem an unsafe distance at all, and yeah, I think I underestimated by a lot... a lot. You can see at the very end of this vid the distance between the tent (on the right) and those barrels (on the left)... 75 feet I'm not sure, but definitely over 40.
