Contingency money is down lately too. The mid 90s with the Neons, you could almost race an entire year on the money you could win if you were good, not so anymore.
I've broken even at one event. That's it. I was in a borrowed car, which took away the majority of my winnings though. *shrug* Don't ever get into racing to win money.
"how do you make a small fortune in racing?"
"start with a large fortune."

There are 20 events in the entire NATION that you can actually win money at each year. And only certain companies have payouts. FYI, only 2 are in Florida too, next closest is Virginia or Texas.
Again, this is a hobby, and you won't ever even break even on ONE event let alone a year. You will always lose money. We are in this because we love it, nothing more.
And I never said a word about making a living off it, as NOBODY can or ever will do that. What I said is that their racing budget was covered. They still have hotel, travel, food, gas, plus all the regular stuff.
This is THE bottom level of competitive motorsport.

I'd think Jean Kinser's making a decent living, eh? You've just got to have the right approach.

No one will ever make any money from any type of motorsports.
The money it takes to be a winner in any motorsports where there are prizes will never be offset by your winnings.
Thats the reason why most professional race cars look like rolling billboards. They make money from sponship/advertising.

even with 11 championships or however many she has now, she's not making money from that, but from the business she runs, in which she rarely instructs anymore due to getting easily motion sick.

There is an old saying "speed costs money, how fast can you afford to go?"
In the late 80's, over a four year period, I spent over $30,000 in the sport. That included the car (which I bought for $4,000), 4 race engine rebuilds, mods, gears, trailer, tires (8 sets a year), 4 sets of wheels, racing fuel, travel costs, entry fees, etc. I "won" two sets of tires, and less than $100. But, I did have alot of fun, running events all over the southeast, three Solo Nationals in Kansas, and several Pro Solo's in Ohio.

When you win a class with the RX-7 with turbo and you think it was pretty fast and along comes a 36 hp formule VW that will blow your doors off.
Auto crossing is a excellent plase to learn how to drive with finace and be quick. Then go to Penn, to the Blue Ridge regio do some hill climbs,, Fastest car up mountain (payment) no guard rails sometime (mtn Washington) 3000! cliff 75 feet from road seperates the boys from the girls. pardon the pun, they have a 350Hp 950 lb formule ford. fast run circles around gt- corvettes. No end to thrills, if you crash it is your fault, cant blame another driver. Have fun check with Centel Florida Region
