noob question
I obviously know nothing about car audio yet.
I'm looking to build a system that a good full deep pound (rap) filled out with a full range high quality mid and high end (I listen to all types of music).
I was thinking 2-12s would suffice for the bass but what other kind of speakers should I match the 12s with for the full clear sound?
..9s? 6x9s? tweeters?
In other words just in terms of speakers what is good to match with 2-3 12s? leave wattage and other complications for later.
Thanks

What kind of car do you have? Any particular budget you're trying to work with?

your question sucks. Dont take offense but you need to consider the many factors. Just like with engines there is no magic combo to get you a magic number.
remember your the one thats the newb.
My 4x10's and 4x6's were good enough for my 13w7 because
1) they were in a truck firing directly in front of me
2) had plenty of good quality power
3) were a good brand with good output
If you amplifiy your stock speakers i bet they wake up and keep up with you subs. once again...thats no 100% because we dont know what vehicle you have, what radio you have or if even have a freaking car.

Ok, well then I'm going to assume you have a car with no space constraints and an unlimted budget.
I'd do 2-3 high quality 12's in a carefully designed and constructed ported enclosure with an absolute ton of power so as to have a ton of headroom for maximum sound quality.
To support this power I'd upgrade the alternator as large as possible, and possibly even add a second one if the vehicle allows. You can never have too much charging system. I'd upgrade all stock wiring and toss the stock battery and swap in a nice new one, and add a second one in the rear for extended playing time and current capacity.
I'd buy the best sounding amplifiers I could get and power the hell out of a high end set of components up front built into custom kick panels if this theoretical vehicle allows for it. Actually I would use 2 sets of these components because volume is obviously a desire here, and we want to make sure it's there. In the rear I'd do a single matching set of these components, also with lots of excellent power.
Up front I'd pick a source unit with a good DAC and whatever features i want, and run it into a good EQ for maximum tuning purposes.
I'd sound deaden the entire car and eliminate as many rattles as possible.
And I'd have an awesome sounding car that gets ridiculously loud. I might have spent 10,000$ or more, but it will jam.
Now of course you don't have to go anywhere near that extent to have good sound, but without a little more clarity I'm not sure anyone can really help you.

Too many variables to have an anwser to your theoretical question.

If price and vehicle is not relevant walk into an arc audio dealer ask them to go to the car lot and pick there favorite vehicle to work on.. bring it back to the shop tell em your demands come back in 1-3weeks with 20k plus in hand..
Better yet, do this BUT ask for sponsorship and just attend competitions, shows, etc. Then proceed to save $5k-$8k in stereo shit.

+1
i would build a system simular to what luke81 mentioned, maybe for simplicity use a kenwood excelon 9140, and elimnate the sound processor and crossover as it is built in that unit, over power every speaker in the system and leave gains real low give huge head room. i probable would do 4 - 10's, get damn loud but reproduce all fq very accuratly. you could do a system like that for 5-6K
