Decision time
Even if you build a box out of MDF, for a single 12 it still wouldnt be very heavy or big. If you build a box thats 14x14x14, thats 1.1 cubic feet, stuff a little polyfill in it (it makes the subwoofer act like its in a larger box) and you will be good to go.
Yes. The Polyfil makes the speaker "see" a larger airspace.
The standard for enclosures is 3/4" thick MDF. Dont use plywood. Another wood that you can use is 13 ply Baltic Birch. It cuts easier, is much lighter, and even stronger than MDF. Only problem is it costs about 3x as much, about $60 a sheet, whereas MDF is only $23 or so a sheet.
For a 2 12 or 1 12 sealed box, you should be able to get away with 1/2 a sheet of MDF.

Come by the shop and listen to the JL Audio 8W3v3 in their PowerWedge ported enclosure. You will be AMAZED on how much sound, and the quality of it-that comes from this little setup. It is one of our best selling sub setups believe it or not. Even if you don't want to buy one-it will give you an idea of how large of sound you can get out of a small setup.

Yeah, you definately dont need anything huge for some good sound. A nice single 10 in a ported box and a true 700 watts and you will be plenty loud and have some real good sound.
If you want space, go with the bazooka. If you want sound, go with the 12. A bazooka tube will never compare to any 12. If you're really concerned about space, maybe you should consider a decent 8 or 10" woofer, or like Dalton said, a custom fiberglassed enclosure.

I have to say though, I have never had a customer that we installed a Bazooka tube for that was truly happy with what they got for the money-we stopped selling them a few years ago for that reason (I am sure the other installers/shop owners here have had the same feedback in their experience).
Be sure to listen to a few of them before making up your mind. Or purchase one locally from someone who has a really good return policy just in case you are not happy with it...
