dude what it sounds like u dont have the amp wired right you said it was a older amp what ohm rating are ur subs and and what can the amp do alot of older amps cant run in 2 ohms and can check how many ohms your subs and putting out with a volt meter and it can also be a bad ground or the power wire is too small and cant get the wattage needed to run the amp.Just trying to help look in to these things.

Try stepping down the "bass boost" or "gains" whichever your amp may have....could be that its clipping on ya?

Tried and made sure I had everything wired correctly. My other to smaller amps will power on fine, but this one just wont work. As for the gains, they are set all the way down anyway.

+1 Ohm rate WILL effect the amp. I had the same problem with one of my older amps, turns out that the amp wasn't able to run at 1ohm, try switching it to 4ohms at the least. If the problem still occurs then its time for a new amp.
