sub thread from TBspyder thread...10" 150db
I'd like to see this as well. I'm having trouble imagining it, though, based on things like this...
16 12's in an Astro doing 154, on almost 10k watts
1 15 on something like 5000 watts doing 147 ish
2 18's on 2500 watts at 148
2 15's on 2000 watts at 147
6 15 Treos on bunches of power at 148
These were all on my termlab, at various meets. I'm just having trouble coming to grips with the physics of a 10" woofer doing 150 db. A 15" woofer has over twice the cone area of a 10, so its Xmax would have to be huge.
Sure, Nate Munson did like 170 with a 10, but if I'm not mistaken, that was at some farily high frequency, before they changed the DBDrag rules to only allow up to 80 hz.
All that being said, I don't claim to know everything (not even close), so I'm not going to say that it can't be done. Several of you guys on here seem to be tuned in to the SPL world...what do you think it would take to get 150db out of a 10? I'm interested in specifics...box design, what 10, how much power, what car, what media (burp, tone, frequency), and how much other work would it take (electrical system, sound dampening, etc). If someone puts forth an idea that seems reasonable, maybe I'll put it together, and see what it can do.
For the sake of science, of course.
Toby
Dude over on CA.com hit 151 legal with a 10" Type-R and a 2500D Orion
. I have no clue what type of box he has though. I kno he hit that at 40something hz.
I would like to try this as well, it would be a fun project.
EDIT: I just noticed he posted on the TB thread, name is TommyK

if i wasnt such a lazy ass and i wasnt selling these two 10" audiobahns to a friend of mine, i'd try something crazy as hell too.
this all sounds interesting.
though i really want to meter my D6's since i've never gotten them metered yet, new box, new subs, new power supply, new alt, and im also going to try and go for broke on a 40 or 50hz test tone. =X

Still pretty good for a $90 10" if I do say so myself.
And just an FYI, I've been using the same type-r for over a year now and still haven't blown it.

Very impressive.
I don't suppose you are local? I'd love to see this in action. Any chance you'll share details on the enclosure?
My simple mind says that to do this, you'll need to drive the woofer way beyond its BL limited xmax, toward its true mechanical xmax (sort of like a slingshot effect). Along the way, you'd generate lots of odd order harmonics, which would boost the spl.
Did the 147.3 come at the beginning of a burp, or did the system build up to it? I wouldn't guess you could play it all that long at that power level.
Don't take any of this as bashing...I'm just curious.

As for the enclosure, its about 2 cubes and uses aeroports (Welcome to Precision Sound Products!)
When I burp my vehicle, I start with the volume lower and then roll it up. If I try to burp it full tilt right off the bat, it usually makes the sub bottom out hard, something I never want to do again.
So yes, I am pushing the sub to it's mechanical limits.2000 RMS on a 500 RMS rated woofer tends to do that.
damn bro thats pretty impressive as Toby said, i would love to see this in action but can't, i might go and buy the same sub and amp and try this myself

Not everyone can feed a sub 4x it's rated RMS and get away with it often. It takes a good ear and knowing when enough is enough.

But I'll say that the type-r is a very good sub for the money.
hay toby i rep ya back for given me some thanks
