the second battery is only useful if youre playing with the car off. and for the price of two yellow tops and isolator, he could have a new alternator, and be sure to cover the problem

does upgrading the power wire from the alt to the battery really make that much of a difference

I had a yellow top in my old explorer with a 1500.1 hifonics amp and 400 watt 2 chan hifonics amp and it ran great. The only thing is at nite there was a slight headlight dim when the bass hit full blast, other than that I had no probs

It depends on the car. I've seen cars with 10 guage wire from the alternator and a battery the size of a lawn tractors from factory...that's obviously not going to cut it if you're running a 500+ watt amp with 4 guage wiring.

well I am about to run a red top (cant afford a yellow this time around). Stock wiring from alt to batt looks around 8 guage with thick strands, not really flexable. What do you reccomend?

I'd go with 4 guage from your battery to your alternator, and also your battery ground to your chassis. It's usually a good idea to run atleast the same guage as your amp's wire.
