Vern Schuppan, a 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, developed the car bearing his name, the Schuppan 962CR. He had grand plans for the vehicle, but it all fell apart.



Schuppan had the backing of the Japanese Art Sports Corporation (ASC). When the Japanese economy collapsed in 1992, the production of the vehicle ended. The run is believed to include a 962LM prototype, two 962LM production cars, two 962CR prototypes and two production 962CRs.



The car is based on a Porsche 962, with a body designed by current GM VP of Global Design, Mike Simcoe, and an IMSA-spec 3.4-liter flat six designed by legendary Porsche engineer Hans Mezger. The 962CR briefly held the title of the world’s fastest production car, reaching speeds of 230-plus mph.



ASC was supposed to receive this car, but they refused delivery. Schuppan then sold it to his neighbor, who kept it in his collection for nearly 30 years. The 962CR currently has just 91 miles on the odometer.
