Park Place Motorsports owner/driver Patrick Lindsey has removed his No. 73 Porsche 911 GT3 R from the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s entry list for the Aug. 26-28 IMSA event at VIRginia International Raceway.
The move follows Wednesday’s decision by WeatherTech founder and series sponsor David MacNeil to withdraw his No. 22 WeatherTech Porsche 911 GT3 R from the GT Daytona class for the remainder of the season. Lindsey, like MacNeil, has cited concerns over the series’ Balance of Performance tables in relation to Porsche’s GT3 product.
“We’ve had long and in-depth discussions for some time with the series over the current BoP with the Porsche,” Lindsey told RACER. "We feel we are not competing on a level playing field with our peers. Therefore, we are opting out of spending money for the VIR event; money that would not have shown a proper return for our sponsors."
Lindsey and full-season co-driver Jorg Bergmeister will return to complete the final two races on the WeatherTech Championship’s schedule.
“We have sponsorship obligations that will require us to compete at Circuit of The Americas and Petit Le Mans,” Lindsey continued. "We look forward to fulfilling those obligations in the Park Place 911 GT3 R. It is a great event for our sponsors and we enjoy having them at the track."
Lindsey also expressed his solidarity with the WeatherTech team.
"We are standing with the 22 car and other Porsche teams in the hope it will result in changes for the good of the sport," he added
Lindsey and Bergmeister finished second in GTD at the most recent race held at Road America and sit 10th in the championship standings.
With the No. 22 and No. 73 Porsches absent from VIR, and the recent withdrawal of the No. 540 Black Swan Racing Porsche from the series due to family obligations by team owner Tim Pappas, the No. 23 Team Seattle/Alex Job Racing 911 GT3 R could be the only Porsche entry in GTD for IMSA's next round.
