Default 00 jetta hesitation

I tried to start my car early this morning and it did for one second and then shut down ... i tried again and i was barely staying on and it stayed like that till it warmed up . tried driving it after it kinda was stable and everytime i pushed on the gas its seemed like it was going to shut down on me ... drove it for a few more and seemed to be ok till i decided to hit on the gas even more and the check engine light started blinking and then stayed on ...i dont know what might be wrong with it my friend suggested fuel filter might be clogged but i was wondering if someone else has dealt with this issue ....
btw its a 2000 vw jetta 2.0 150k miles ..thanks in advance
