82' 928 porsche woes
I bought my first porsche and I'm completely in love. Googly eyes and everything.
Its an 82' 928, silver, with brown leather interior.
Its needs work to say the least but its a solid car.
I'm still kind of new to the restoration process and I'm doing everything on my own so its slow going and a learning process!
Constructive criticism is encouraged!

So basically what has been happening since I bought it, it ran great, it started right up, no issues..
Then I found that the gas tank had a crack in the bottom of it that some one had plastic welded so I replaced the tank. $$$$$$
I also ride a motorcycle (05' yamaha r6) and I got hit, tboned, by a dumb cellphone using driver
which crushed my left foot and right after this happened my brakes went out so I had to get them drained and what not at a shop since I was slightly incapacitated with drugs and pain and unable to doso myself.
SO I drove it and it suddenly stopped running. I mean, the electrical system was still working but just no go.
I figured I ran out of gas since the instrument panel wasnt working and I had just miscalculated the distance I drove so I towed it home to take a looksie but became so busy with court dates and dealings with the accident that I didnt get a chance to look at her for a good two and a half months. She just sat in my garage all lonely.
So now this is where I am..
Problem: will not start!
Battery was dead and not taking a jump OR charge.. old battery, so went and got a Porsche battery from auto zone
Battery: $135.00
Installed that and things seemed on the up but then it would turn over but no starting..
Got a gas can and filled the gas tank with 8 gallons to be sure.
STILL no starting, I had ignition, spark, air, just no fuel...
I even sprayed an accelerator into the air intake and it would start and run on those fumes until it died again..
I went through to troubleshoot to make sure fuses were good, I found that fuse 15 was blown and its supposed to be either my window motor which the motor was still working so wtf.. so the wiring label is for the 928s?? so idk. (I have all but two of the original service manuals so I'm following the schematics from them but they are for the 928s and I dont think mine is an 's' model but ummm maybe some one can correct me..)
I did replace fuse 5 and 15 since they were blown any way, 5- windshield wipers and 15- power window regulator.

checked fuel lines in the engine bay and they were all tight.
On the right side of the fuel bank I found that the pressure port for testing the fuel line when I turned the ignition on there was getting no fuel pressure what-soever.
So I am not getting fuel pressure to the fuel injectors
Suspected fuel pump malfunction or clogged filter.
The conclusion for today is that the fuel pump is either bad or not receiving powah!
Now.. before I lift the beast and crawl under its growly belly pan to get all greasy.. is there ANY thing else I should or could check for? Any suggestions would be appreciated, otherwise, I shall commence grease monkey-ness

damn man sorry to hear about your accident. i hope everything goes well.
as for the fuel problem though check the fuel pressure regulator and all the lines cause you could have a pinched line somewhere.( happened to me on my bug) but if your good there then check power to the fuel pump. and judging by the story thats what it sounds like. 28 year old car, original fuel pump, it was going to go sometime.
but check with either justin at urotuning.com or germanautoparts.com. they will have just about everything your looking for.

True that about the fuel pump going out, I really wouldnt be surprised if that was the problem. It certainly is suspicious that way.
I'm gonna get in there today and double check the lines and regulator before I get down and dirty but I have a feeling I'll be underneath her regardless.
I still need to asses all of the bits and pieces with my own eyes to see what kind of parts I need to get BEFORE they bust.
Thanks for the links, I'm always looking for better parts places so I can price shop and customer service compare.
I shall post my progress with pics >.-

x2 on the fuel pump..it really does sound like its out...while youre there it would be ebst to go ahead and do new pump and filter....and replace the FPR as well as any old and weathered fuel lines you might see.
good luck girlie

Hey Guys!
Thanks for the suggestions, I pulled off the tank skirt today

And this is what I found-

Basically no big deal, I metered the Voltage- 9v :/
So when I turned the key and listened for tell tale sound from the pump...y'know.. just in case.. nada..
SOB!
I called a friend of mine that has an 81 and he was basically convinced as I was- yes indeed the pump has gone bad...
What I also found-

The bastards I let replace my tank while I was laid up after the accident didnt replace the rubber line from tank to fuel pump..
Seriously, it was dry rotted and LEAKING..
Awesome.. the everyday reminder of why I refuse to take my cars and bikes to a shop.
I ordered a pump today and should have it by tomorrow morning (11 ish) and I'll be able to switch that out, thank god I only have 8 gallons in the tank right now- Full would be a pain to deal with since I dont have access to a lift.
I'll keep you updated on the progress! But I think we may have it pinned.
Quick question-
My instrument panel isnt working at all, including the gas gauge... First, ok so it kinda works, meaning it jumps when I wiggle the fuse's... BUT they dont read accurately or at all.
I'm most interested in the gas gauge, does that sound like an electrical issue OR an individual one, like the individual sensors are done..
Should I replace the sensor in the tank while I'm doing this or is that likely not to solve the issue.
I'm just trying to save work on some level... HAHAHAHA oh god thats a laugh.. save work...
Lastly-
Where to find a not painfully expensive instrument cluster? Something maybe classic but updated? I'd get one of those badass digital ones for track days but thats basically what I paid for the car
I've been looking online but I feel like there have to be more options out there.

a good friend of mine is a hardcore 928 enthusiast. he frequents rennlist on a regular basis and he said you should find anything and everything you could ever wanna know about 928s. he said you could literally read for days lol.
im gonna go with either there is a short to the cluster..or the cluster is bad....just like you tested the voltage to the pump...do it to the cluster....and trace it all the way back to where its not working
Just a quick update..
Removing the fuel pump on that car was a bitch... because the nut was stripped to one of the posts..
Arg. I had to hacksaw it off and then tear it apart to get the nut off the bolt and the wires off the bolt.
I couldnt clip the wires and just redo that part because A- Those wires were done really well and I didnt want to fuck it up and B- They were really short so I risked not being able to reach the pump once I fixed it all back up.
SO that being said... another 350$ into the car.
Once the pump and filter were on it started right up... for a little bit.
It idled while on the jacks and then I turned it off and rebolted the tank skirt and took the bitch off the stands.
Tried to start her... nope.
I'm like WTF... It fired it turned over but there was something going on and it wasnt STAYING turned over, it would just let itself die immediately after I let go of the key to roll back to position from starting.
Sooo... I opened up the hood to listen.
Everything seemed kosher.. but I took the airfilter off and put my hand over the intake and it started. sooo I'm a dumb ass that needs a new airfilter cause mine iz dirty..
Plus I found a coolant leak AND my power steering leaks.
So I get to get new tubing for all that good stuff.
But that being said she ran really nicely once I got her running again.
So damn smooth.
<3 i am in lurv
Pics will follow in a bit.
