Hmm found this in the VWVortex.....
I read about how to do this recently and it took me a while of searching to track down the instructions but here you go.
Let me preface this by stating that it worked in my 96 2.0l and I am not sure what cars it does and does not work on.
1. Turn your key to the on position (do not start the car).
I waited until all the lights and beeping calmed down and the gas guage registed
2. Push down the trip computer button
3. Turn the key off while still holding the trip button down
Again I waited until all the lights stopped and the gas gauge went back to E
4. With the button still supressed start the car.
5. Release the button and cycle through the different functions.
Mine reset to regualr speedo/trip functions the next time I started the car.
I dont know what all the functions do I put the what my car read out below.
Hopefully somebody who knows will post and tell us what everything is reading out.
Function = Read out
1 = 6214 (no idea what this is)
2 = 4 (no idea what this is)
3 = 31470 (for some reason I have seen this number before maybe on my ECU)
4 = 4 (no idea)
5 = Lights all the LCDs in the guage to see that they work
6 = 0 (I was parked at the time so this could read out different when moving)
7 = Digital tackometer
8 = Trip counter
As an aside I had reset my battery shortly before becuause I replaced my igintion coil pack. That may be the reason for some of low numbers in my read-outs.
Good Luck.

There is also a feature like that for the MKIV with the climate controls.... Hmmmmmm I think it was you hold the fan down button the blue button tha makes the air cooler and AUTO. You push and hold all of them and you get some diagnostic thing. if you hit the temp up and down buttons it goes to differant fuctions. The only one I remember right now is that no.16 is a digital speedometer. I will see if I cant find what the rest of the functions mean.
