does anything happen differently when the light comes on? or does it just pop up w/o warning?

If it goes away, then it probably isn't a major problem. It sees an error, the light comes on, then after a certain number of cycles, if it doesn't detect the error again, it resets itself. Maybe a misfire or something along those lines.

Not sure where you are located, but I can scan it for you if you want.

That's far as hell from me, maybe one of those Pinellas guys can help you out.

However, if you feel like driving quite a bit, I can help you. I have full vag-com, so we could check certain measuring blocks as well as read codes.
