Look at the trunk hatch on it.
Its an early cabrio without the clipper kit, the later ones came with the clipper kit.
And cabrios always had those small taillights.
Early cabrios are called covertable rabbits(mk1 golf) maybe thats why he has the badge?

I believe those were taken at the European Bug-In a few months back. Its definitely not California because there's rain clouds above
