Ha! Ya if the lifters aren't ticking in a VR, something may be wrong. I can hear the lifters on the 24v with less than 30k miles. That's sad, but I guess it's the design.

haha i know the other guys are gonna be mad at me but I bought my 1.8t w/ 55k miles on it and had it checked by a mechanic (which told me everything was perfect) haha far from the truth, anyways take it to f&h on 30th and fletcher 813 631 9500 cuz i spent well over 2k just getting it to work decent. I know its not a vr6 but i would steer clear from any vw over 50k miles. Oh and yes before people rip me a new one im a car salesman and have seen many problem vw's come thru. but like i said call that number and ask fernando to look at it he knows what hes doin i promise cuz mines perfect now. hope this helps

I would worry about a 1.8t more than a VR6. The early 1.8t's were problematic. Plus you have a lot of 1.8t's that were modded and beat, then all the mods were removed and people sold them as "stock" cars.

The car is in St. Pete, which makes taking it to Tampa to have it looked at a bit hard. Do appreciate the input though. I have a mechanic that my family has been using for a long time that is actually a specialist in VWs, so that will help in the initial part. I will probably ask the place selling it if they can put in a new timing chain and clutch then include them in the price of the sale.

Thanks a bunch for all of your input guys, really is nice to see people willing to help out a newbie!

Just an FYI, it will probably run about 1400 bucks to have them do a timing chain and clutch job.

Wow that much? I was told that the timing belt on the VR6 is round 500. How much ist it for the clutch?

For anyone the missed it, a VR6 has CHAINS. The chains and all the tensioners are about 160 dollars in parts (if you get them online). Usually they charge about 9-10 hours for labor and if you let your mechanic get the parts it will cost twice as much as getting them online. Plus he said he wanted to get the clutch done, so I added another 300-400 for that. I had my VW tech buddy do my clutch, rear main seal and all timing bits. I got all the parts myself for about 400 and gave him 300 bucks for spending his whole day saturday doing it (he wasn't expecting any money for it).

So if you can find a qualified shop, or the dealership to do it for 500, I would be shocked. You have to drop the tranny to access the lower chain and guides, so they just kill you on labor charges. Maybe a timing belt job on a 1.8t is around 500.

And again, the VR6 has chains.

Yes I know the VR6 has chains. I just said belt in the last post. Sorry. No need to bash me about it.

Well I go to a local shop called Volkstech and they say timing chain is aroud 500 for it. They say it would be around 300 for the 1.8t's belt But thats what they charge.
I know it would be 500 if I were to go to Audi and have it done on my 1.8t. Because the guy who had my car before me had it done for that much.
but I was just asking. Thanks for the info.

So you got a car with mods out the ass, and had to spend 2K on it to get it to run right at a mechanic? Dont call me suprised.

Any kid can buy a car and mod it with poor quality work, then sell it.. I have one right here.
