Default Questions about 99-05 1.8t

I'm interested in buying a mk IV 1.8t and i have heard somethings about the engine changing somehow from 01 to 02.

1.What is changed on then engine to get to 20 or 30 extra hp?

2. Are all 02's with the newer engine? (i've heard some 02's didn't change)

3. and if all the 02's didn't get the better engine, what do i look for when i look at the car to determine the differences?

They went from AWW/AWD engine code to AWP, the change was just a little more boost from a KO3 sport instead of the regular K03 on the earlier years. Also the early years were underrated by VW, so when VW came with the 24V VR6 rated at 201 they could up the HP on the 1.8t, basically VW didn't want the 1.8t to steal the VR6's market, since the VR6 was the "higher" model. All of the 1.8t's respond to the usual mods the same, so if you plan on modding it, it won't matter what year you have.

From a performance perspective; My guess is that a worked 16v head can flow as much as a worked 20v head with less moving parts. I don't speak for every 16v head out there, but i've seen a few that outflow my fully worked 12v head.

I guess 20v's doesnt make a diff unless you have a huge turbo, but then theres no tq and wheres the fun in that . . . wish i had a vr6

I'm running around on a lightly modded 1.8t and [*action* Knocks on wood] have never had a problem.
I just turned 24K miles and the car still runs strong..if not stronger then the day I bought it.

I see what you're saying and do agree, but not entirely. A 20v can make the same power (or more) than a VR. The stress on the motor is the issue. 400hp in a VR and 400hp in a 1.8t are two different things... That little motor is walking on eggshells in that range; while the VR is still in it's proven "safe zone".

Disclaimer: This is not intended to start a poll or competition between motors, but experience with both has led me to the long term strength and reliability of a VR.
