Default Question about 01' - 03' Golf GTI

Right now I Have an MK3 GTI and all in all teh car has been great.. The 2.0 is lacking a bit in speed but it has many pros that make up for the lack of HP.

Well come January I am selling it and purchasing a new car. I have had my mind set on an Subaru Impreza STI. Or at teh least a WRX.

Well I have been goign over the numbers for and sti and yes the car is god dawm amazing but a 500 month car payment plus insurance is a bit a high for my liking.

To get to teh point I have been pricing some GTI 1.8T's and the payment plus insurance is great. But what I want to know is are owners generaly happy with teh car or am I goign to get it and kick my slef for not spending another 5,000 and getting a WRX.

Also how tuff and pricy are mods for 1.8t. I do want to squeeze some extra HP out of it, but I also do need to keep my warrenty valid because I travel quite a bit and need some kind of peace of mind.

Thank you ahead for the input.

- Mike

if you want your warrenty dont think about mods and just pick up a vr6..but if u get the 1.8 u can chip it without them finding it (unless a mechanic drives it) and thats about it..good luck on your decision and u cant go wrong with VW..

I was just car shopping, I thought about a STI, but I am not fond of the looks, the evo was nice, but not a car I would want to drive everyday, so I got an R32. I would recommend an 03 VR6 GTI or Jetta if you want nice smooth power, good high speed cruising capabilities and keep a warranty.

Get a 1.8t and chip it. Chances are you probably wont' have much if any warranty left anyway, especially if you go with an 01(2/24).

Well I would be purchasing an extended warranty.

How are the 03' VR6 Gti's out of teh box? Also what yields more power with light modding?

I hear a lot about the 1.8T's but not to much about the Vr6's

The 24v vr6 are very nice out of the box; smooth power and a nice v6 exhaust note. The 1.8t are not as much power in stock form(180 for the 1.8t, 200 for the vr6).

Really It depends on how you do most of your driving, the 1.8t has ALOT of midrange power but it does fall on it's face around 5500 because, simply, the turbo is too small. The VR6s I've drove were a very linear pull that just didn't stop. But I did miss the ~245ftlbs kick in the pants my chipped 1.8t delivered around 3k...

I don't think you can go wrong with either motor.
