Default help

Ok so im driving home and my car starts making a squeaking noise. And the more I drive the louder it gets. Finnly it turns into a high pitch squel so I cut off my AC and it still doesnt stop.
I get to a red light and I see all this whiteish smoke coming from under the hood. So I pull into a mechanics shop and they pop the hood and the noise is coming from the belt side and so is the smoke but they are not sure exactly where.

The oil is fine, the coolant looks to be fine, and the exhaust has no weird smoke coming out.

So they say its probbly somethign seized. So I leave it there for diagnostics.

What do you think it is???? And how much is what you think goign to cost me?

The car is a 96 GTI 2.0 8v with exactly 94000 miles as of yesterday.

ok so my mechanic just called me...

He says that they pulled the car in last nigth and the noise was there but it was running. But this mornign they couldnt get it to start so they did a compression test and got nothing so he told me it looks like the Timing belt dropped...

So he proceddes to tell me the engine is non-interferance (or somethign liek that) and that he can put a new belt on for 275.00 and the car may or may not run. But he recommends a new timign belt and head work because the fact teh belt failed may have taken the valves with it.

Is what he saying true or not? He said to do the head work and new belt im looking at over 1000.00

Am I being ripped off?

What do you think?

um maybe.. But it might be as simple as the tensioner on the alternator.. Maybe that belt slipped off or something causing you to not make any juice.. which could also be reason for your car not being able to start in the morning. If it was your timing belt, then i'm sorry cuz that may cause a lot of bad stuff to happen.. hehe good luck

don't pay for that. I dont think that your timing belt dropped cause your car would have cut out. try to take it somewhere else or bring someone who knows about this stuff to that shop to look at it

I agree. If it was non-interference, then you WOULDNT have to worry about the valves and such. Dont use them.

if it was the timing belt if your car is 5spd thier will be no damage to the valves if your car is auto their is a good chance that it has damage to the valves.

This makes no sense. Get the car to a different shop.Oh, and the auto trans and 5spd idea is wrong.

i didn't belive it either when my former boss told me either but I have seen it,. i the last two years i have seen no 5spd mk3 with a broken timingbelt have valve damage but every auto has had damage. This is my experiance, the shop i wokrd in in RI did nothing but volkwagen since 1964, has won 5 or 6 circletrack championships in 4cly division at two diffent tracks including last year with watter cooled VW's.

This is my experiance im not going to get in to a name calling contest with anyone, take what i have to say and picth it out the window.like i said this has been my experiance.

My buddies timing belt went out on his 95 Golf 2.0, and his valves all went to shit. It was a 5speed.
