One of the reason this movie stands out as one of the best movies of all time is that in most movies today you will often hear people say the book was better than the movie that's because the author of the book never wrote the movie in this case Mario wrote the book AND the movie. [along with Coppola] so the intensity of the story was never lost.

There was a part of this movie that I did not understand until much later. When the senior Godfather Vito Corleone called the meeting of the Five Families at that conference, he swore on the soul of his grand-children that he would not be the one to break the peace which they had made there, on that day. He forgoes the vengeance of his son, and he keeps his oath.

But we know from other sources that his vengeance is actually coming. That is because there was an omission in his vow. That oath was not incumbent upon his heir and successor, Michael Corleone. He said nothing at all about MICHAEL not breaking that peace. So what happens? Vito dies, Michael takes over as the new Godfather, and wreaks his vengeance on everybody: A real blood-bath! Am I correct?

Forces in the film industry were in conflict: Hollywood was on the decline toward cultural irrelevance, conglomerates were taking over the storied movie studios and a new generation of auteur filmmakers including the young and then unknown Francis Coppola were emerging from film schools. The studio hated Coppola's ideas for casting, visual style and almost everything

else, as they hoped for a quick, inexpensive exploitation of a pulpy best-seller. But one year later, said then Secretary of State Henry Kissinger at the world premiere in New York City: "...this picture is going to be just huge around the world, because if you can cry for a leading character who has killed 100s of people when he dies, and you cry for him when he's dying, that's touching greatness, and this man, Coppola, has touched greatness."
