All Amish teens at a certain age usually 18 years old can go and live in the outside world for two years. This gives them a choice to live with the "English" or return in two years or before the time is up. They experience all the things any young person outside their Amish Communities does. Drive cars, wear makeup, dance, and drink and wear fashionable clothes plus date whom ever they wish. It gives them a chance to choose for them selves. Once the commit to the way they want to live the rest of their life than it is final and only then. I sincerely hope this clears up the misconception you observed in this movie.

I am not Amish, however, it is a more pure and simpler life than outside in the "English" world, I would have preferred to live. They have close net families and ties to each other the outside world has long forgotten in the young people today and even in my own generation. Today not one of you could survive life without a grocery store. You have no idea how to farm or grow gardens or even cook real delicious food without any preservatives or chemicals and the same with their farm animals or even build a house or barn.

You seem to think that they leave penniless with no place to grow. That is incorrect also. These people are not poor they are farmers, carpenters, homebuilders and do work for others outside their community as well as on their own land. The women make beautiful hand made quilts, bake all sorts of bake goods and sell produce in a small building on their own land. These are very productive and hard working people who live a rich fulling clean life where tobacco, alcohol and drugs do not exist in their world.

Love the movie. I would like to make a comment based on why I understand. One reason of why all this happened, religion. love is love. Religious beliefs has to be apply in the real context. Not their wrong interpretations based in traditions. How a pastor has to tell yhem whay to do? Amish? Whatever, is their way to be. God send His son Jesus to save us and as a Good Great father He is, at the end, to forgive if we repent from our sins. He is our savior. He know we are going to fail sometimes. He is able to forgive us. Religion don't save. Extreme religion separate people, families, society even thus nowadays kill. Love always conquer. Jesus made us free. His mercy is real. He never going to stop loving us. And last, live the live to the fullest without doing something wrong or harm others or yourself. Celebrate Love!

I live in a Amish, Mennonite community near Lancaster, (New Holland) they don't get mix with other race, culture or religion, I don't think you could become an Amish if you are not born Amish or get into a relationship with an Amish, you could be Mennonite, its close to Amish, more modern. But Amish, no, its like Jews they dont mix with other race or religion. Some of them are friendly, some of them are not, due to their religion....there is tow type of Amish, old "school" and modern; you cant take pictures of them, or even talk to them. But I do love the environment, animals around me... its very peaceful...its good for kids, peaceful, quite and safe. Some of the things in the movie are altered, but is just a "movie" some of them are not true.
